Job Overview
The Director, Planned Giving will define a strategy for the planned giving program that includes maximizing revenues through the full range of planned giving vehicles and instruments. The Director will be deeply knowledgeable in the technical details of planned gifts; lead and motivate a team, and successfully manage their own portfolio of individual prospects,, as well as stay fully abreast of changes in tax legislation and other legislation impacting planned giving, and maintain robust forms of communication to their team and others on such changes.
The Director, Planned Giving works in cooperation with the Executive Director of Planned Giving to develop and execute an effective plan ensuring a healthy pipeline of planned giving prospects is always in place. The Director will collaborate with Gift Officers at headquarters and hospital locations, educating them about planned giving vehicles, strategies and tactics, creating a partnership, which will boost attainment of both planned and current gifts. The Director will bring a depth of knowledge and best practice to the role to ensure that the full range of planned giving vehicles are utilized and made available to donors including, charitable remainder and lead trusts, charitable gift annuities, beneficiary designations, bequests, gift of property and securities. The Director will oversee our Dream Makers Legacy Society and work closely with the Corporate Director of Planned Giving in the management of Planned Giving marketing efforts.
Responsibilities
- Lead in the creation, design and execution of Shriners Hospitals for Children‘s (SHC) planned giving strategies and goals and develop metrics to measure ongoing success and ROI.
- Manage a team responsible for the administration of bequest expectancies, Dream Makers Legacy Society, marketing program and other projects.
- Operationalize short-term and long-term planned giving goals and strategies to build upon existing commitments and expand the current donor base of support.
- Partner, coach, equip and encourage development staff to pursue planned gift opportunities, sharing advice, good counsel, and professional leadership for all aspects of a comprehensive planned giving program.
- Develop and maintain policies and procedures that are best practice.
- Manage a portfolio of planned giving prospects leading to the growth in the number and value of completed major, planned and blended gift solicitations.
- Develop proposals for gift opportunities.
- Enhance donor gift planning and giving by remaining current in areas of gift possibilities at SHC.
- Provide timely stewardship of assigned donors and prospects through in person contacts, telephone, email and written correspondence.
- Keep up to date and be proficient on planned giving laws, state and federal regulations and best practices for the planned giving program.
- Develop a strategic network of relationships across the organization and externally, to include various levels of leadership, key volunteers, donors, and professional advisors in the legal, financial and banking communities.
- Promote and support active and broad participation by staff and volunteers in raising planned gifts.
- Attend and assist with seminars, donor cultivation and stewardship events.
- Create and lead comprehensive marketing strategies for planned giving with marketing vendor, including print, digital/website and email marketing.
- Align all planned giving marketing materials across fundraising and marketing programs including lovetotherescue.org website, digital e-newsletter and content for national magazine.
- Coordinate and prepare planned giving materials including letters, newsletters, brochures, articles and blogs. Collaborate with the Planned and Major Giving Operations Manager to implement key marketing initiatives related to planned giving.
- Optimize the performance of the planned giving program through sound budgeting, reporting and key performance indicators.
- Communicate the status of current fundraising activities at all levels.
- Uses Blackbaud CRM to enter donor data and interactions.
- Monitor and provide guidance on planned giving data to ensure consistent data usage, terminology, and hygiene across teams and the enterprise.

Qualifications
Minimum:
- 10+ years of planned and major giving experience
- Experience closing planned giving vehicles such as bequests, gift annuities, trusts, gifts of real estate and other planned gifts, including drafting gift agreement language involving varying degrees of complexity.
- Experience managing a planned giving program and creative and successful approaches to planned giving marketing.
- Experience developing and executing a comprehensive and sophisticated plan that will launch and achieve exceptional planned giving opportunities and gifts.
- Bachelor's Degree
Preferred:
- Experience with cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major and planned gifts ($100,000 and above)
- Master's Degree
