Remote Work in Washington

Washington state's economic story is one of natural resources, industrial giants, and ultimately the digital transformation of the global economy — all played out against the backdrop of the Pacific Northwest's extraordinary natural landscape. The Columbia and Snake rivers, the Olympic Peninsula temperate rainforest, Puget Sound's deep harbor, and the Cascade Range defined the geography that made Washington's economy possible; it was up to Boeing, Microsoft, and Amazon to make it legendary.

The timber industry drove Washington's economy from its territorial days through the mid-twentieth century. The Douglas fir and western red cedar forests of the Cascades and Olympics were the largest softwood timber stands in the continental United States, and companies like Weyerhaeuser (headquartered in Federal Way) logged them at industrial scale. The port of Seattle and Tacoma exported lumber to markets across the Pacific and became some of the most important timber shipping hubs in the world.

Boeing's decision to locate its aircraft manufacturing in Seattle — beginning with contracts during World War I — changed Washington's economic trajectory permanently. During World War II, Boeing's plants around Puget Sound produced thousands of B-17 and B-29 bombers that were central to the Allied air campaign. The postwar jet age made Boeing the dominant commercial aircraft manufacturer in the world, with the 707, 727, 737, 747, 757, 767, 777, and 787 families all developed and largely manufactured in Washington. At Boeing's peak, the company employed over 100,000 people in Washington, making it the single most important employer in the state by a wide margin.

Microsoft, founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1975 and relocated to Bellevue (then Redmond) in 1979, became the dominant software company of the personal computer era and ultimately one of the most valuable companies in the world. The Redmond campus eventually employed over 50,000 people, and the ecosystem of Microsoft veterans who left to found or fund other companies — Amazon, Zillow, Expedia — seeded one of the most dynamic technology ecosystems in the world.

Amazon, founded by Jeff Bezos in a Bellevue garage in 1994, became the model for e-commerce, cloud computing (AWS), and logistics automation, growing into one of the largest companies in the world while remaining headquartered in Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood.

Remote work has been part of Washington's tech culture for years, and the state's no-income-tax advantage has made it a strong attractor of remote workers from California. Smaller cities like Spokane, Bellingham, and Olympia have seen significant growth from remote workers seeking more affordable alternatives to the Seattle metro.
