Legal Services & Justice Reform
Justice Defenders is a registered UK charity and US nonprofit founded in 2007 that works across Africa to train incarcerated people and prison officers to become paralegals and legal defenders. The organization operates prison-based legal offices in Uganda and Kenya staffed by over 280 paralegals who provide legal support to help ensure fair hearings and just legal processes. They partner with prestigious universities, including the University of London, to deliver legal education programs to incarcerated students through online learning supplemented by in-prison teaching support. To date, they have produced 67 law graduates, 2 High Court Advocates who were formerly incarcerated, and 280 paralegals who have assisted 30,000+ clients with half regaining their freedom.
