The Career Coach will provide support to students and alumni of American Military University and American Public University. This role will engage adult learners from a wide variety of backgrounds in conversations regarding career exploration and planning and give assistance and guidance for their job search using a variety of communication tools, such as phone, email, and video conferencing. Successful candidates will be able to work autonomously, solve complex problems, develop goals and milestones in collaboration with their students and alumni, motivate individuals to achieve goals, be proactive in outreach and follow-up and track client success.

In addition, the Career Coach is responsible for the development and execution of group coaching and other webinars and seminars, working with a variety of internal and external stakeholders to acquire and create materials/resources, communicate objectives, meet deadlines, and track the success of event campaigns.

The person will work with a team of passionate, driven, and innovative higher education professionals dedicated to seeing students achieve career success and plays a key part in ensuring an exceptional experience. You must be an energetic professional who can deliver a high-touch, personalized experience in a virtual environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain departmental standards for excellent customer service, responding to phone and email inquiries from APUS students, alumni, and at times, prospective students using systems such as email, phone, virtual conferencing platforms, LinkedIn, etc.
  • Meet individually and in group settings to coach on career-related topics; providing editing, proofreading, and design suggestions about resumes; coaches on interview skills, conducting a job search, preparing for a virtual career fair and other parts of the job search process; reviews social media pages, provides relevant market insight for desired industry
  • Coaching in the discovery and decision-making process of selecting a career; guides them through self-assessments, identifies available resources, and assists in career research
  • This position is responsible for the collection and reporting of statistics on student employment outcomes, maintains accurate records of client goals, case notes, dates of services, and critical communications with supporting departments, i.e., Academic Advising, Faculty, etc.
  • Develop content, designs presentations, and presents virtual workshops to prepare students and alumni on all aspects of the employment and job search process
  • Participate in projects to further develop and improve department processes and resources, working closely with the Career Services Operations team and other University staff
  • Maintain a spirit of teamwork and contributes to an environment that appreciates diversity of thought, support, and working effectively together to enable each employee and the department to succeed
  • Stay abreast of national and local hiring and employment trends; participates in various local, state, regional, and national organizations such as NCDA and NACE to maintain industry knowledge
  • Assist with STEM and National Security industries specifically those interested in federal employment

Requirements:

  • Technology: Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Windows environment; comfortable learning and working with advanced computer applications such as Handshake, Zoom, Teams, Salesforce, LinkedIn
  • Organization: Excellent organizational and administrative skills with the ability to prioritize work, adapt to change, navigate multiple projects, and to maintain attention to detail
  • Editing: Strong editorial and proofreading (English grammar, punctuations, and spelling)
  • Interpersonal and Communication: Above-average written and verbal communications skills; strong relationship-building skills; ability to present effectively to diverse groups both in-person and virtually; excellent customer service; ability to motivate others; effective problem solving and decision-making ability
  • Three years or more of professional work experience required.
  • Career advising experience at a post-secondary institution preferred.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required with preference for Social Science, Communication, Human Resources, or related major

Work Location:

  • This position is fully remote and will require high-speed internet connection and a dedicated workspace free of distractions and dependents.

Work Schedules:

  • This position will be working with colleagues across multiple time zones. The individual will have the opportunity to select working from 7:30am-4:00pm, 8:00am-4:30pm, or 8:30am-5:00pm ET with a 30-minute lunch. The option for a 1-hour lunch is available, which would result an additional 30-minutes to the end of the day.
  • While the position typically requires 40 hours/week during normal business hours, evening and weekend work will be occasionally required with advance notice, particularly during large-scale events.

Physical Demands:

  • This is a sedentary/sitting position, which may last for 12+ hours at a time.
  • This role requires extensive use of a keyboard and mouse and will have multiple video meetings throughout the day.

Travel:

  • The department travels to the Commencement Ceremonies once a year. Depending on employee’s location, same day travel to this location will be required, those living outside the commutable distance will experience overnight travel.
  • 5% Travel required
