Job Description

The Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology Foundation is seeking an outstanding and goal-driven Chief Operating Officer (COO) who is eager to use their leadership and operational expertise to oversee business and clinical research operations, drive strategic growth, and increase efficiency and effectiveness across all departments. The COO is a member of the executive leadership team and is pivotal to the successful execution of the organization’s mission to reduce the impact of cancer on people. Key responsibilities for this position include strategic leadership for overarching organizational goals, management team oversight, improvement through performance optimization, organizational integration across departments and programs, collaboration between key stakeholders, governance and compliance to ensure adherence to internal and external policies and partnership with Alliance leadership to ensure financial health and sustainability for the organization. The COO reports to the President of the Foundation and is responsible for stakeholder engagement with the governance boards.

Requirements

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Lead development of organizational and cross-entity strategic plans that promote organizational growth and integration, in alignment with the Alliance vision, mission and goals, and in partnership with the organization’s leadership
  • Implement metrics-driven business analyses and plans that ensure operational and financial sustainability, in alignment with strategic plans, and with measurable progress milestones
  • In conjunction with the Chief Financial Officer, Director, Organizational Compliance, and Director, Group Operations, assess, manage and mitigate organizational risks
  • Direct organizational development and transition management activities across Alliance and Foundation entities with the purposes of standardization, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, continuous performance improvement and regulatory compliance; balanced with organizational imperatives to adapt to innovations in scientific oncology research and other influences that impact the legal agreements and financial structures
  • Manage budget development, resource allocation and compensation analysis, working closely with the CFO and leadership to ensure financial strength and viability
  • Foster collaborative relationships with global research partners and funding agencies; negotiate mutually beneficial contracts and agreements
  • Oversee Contracts Administration, Human Resources, Systems Administration, Corporate Compliance, Clinical Trial Operations, Regulatory Compliance and Quality Management units

Qualifications & Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, health sciences or another relevant field required
  • Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), Master of Public Health (MPH), Juris Doctor (JD), PhD, MD, advanced degree in health sciences, or other relevant advanced degree preferred
  • 7-10 plus years of relevant management experience with increasing levels of responsibility required.
  • 7-10 plus years of relevant health care, research administration, non-profit management, and/or clinical research industry experience required
  • Solid understanding and experience in resource management, business strategies, and financial management required
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • Superior conflict resolution, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Must be available for travel up to 10-20% of the year

About the Alliance & Alliance Foundation

The Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology (Alliance) is a clinical trials network sponsored by the National Cancer Institute that consists of approximately 10,000 cancer specialists at over 1,000 member hospitals, medical centers, and community sites across the United States and Canada. TheAlliance develops and conducts clinical trials with promising new cancer therapy and utilizes the best science to develop optimal treatment and prevention strategies for cancer, as well as research methods to alleviate the side effects of cancer and cancer treatments.

The Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology Foundation (Foundation) is a non-profit foundation that supports and enhances the ability of the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology to conduct cancer clinical research and address important treatment questions through large-scale clinical trials. The Alliance conducts multi-disciplinary clinical trials and translational research studies to discover new or improved ways to prevent, treat, and cure many types of cancer, including leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, breast, respiratory, neurological, genitourinary, and gastrointestinal cancers. The Alliance and Foundation provides education to the medical community on methods of cancer diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

The Alliance Organization comprises the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology and the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology Foundation and its Entities, including Alliance NCTN Foundation (ANF), Alliance Foundation Trials, LLC (AFT), and Alliance Data Innovation Lab, LLC (Data Lab).
