The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization.

This internship will focus on supporting the Data Science team and is intended to better your knowledge, understanding, and experience in Data Science and statistical analysis. The individual will be responsible for retrieving, processing, analyzing clinical data, and summarizing results to cross-functional teams. You will have the opportunity to learn and work with staff within Data Science as well as other departments and volunteers.

Internship Overview:

  • Time Commitment: 24 hours per week
  • Internship Duration: 5/20/2024 – 8/9/2024
  • Remote Position
  • Salary: $23.00 per hour

Responsibilities

Tasks could include things like the following:

  • Retrieving, processing, and analyzing clinical data or other biomedical data.
  • Developing Data Visualization Tools by designing custom charts and plots to illustrate complex data sets clearly and creating interactive dashboards for data visualization.
  • Summarizing results to cross-functional teams.
  • Draft manuscripts.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a BA/BS or advanced degree in data science, computer science, statistics, or biomedical engineering.
  • Proficiency in data analysis programming languages, particularly R or Python, and a range of data science analysis software.
  • Experience with large-scale machine learning models and natural language processing techniques, with a focus on Large Language Models (LLMs) such as GPT or similar technologies.
  • Proficient in JavaScript, including libraries and frameworks such as D3.js, Chart.js, or React for developing interactive data visualizations.
  • Experience with front-end web development technologies including HTML5, CSS3, and modern JavaScript ES6+ for creating user interfaces and visualizations.
  • Familiarity with web development frameworks such as Angular, React, or Vue.js for crafting responsive web applications.
  • Knowledge of UI/UX design principles to create intuitive and visually appealing data visualizations.
  • In-depth knowledge of data analysis or statistical analysis methodologies, with prior experience with clinical data being advantageous.
  • Ability to deal professionally in a corporate or non-profit environment and assume responsibility for guiding projects and programs from inception through completion.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities.
  • Intermediate to excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Required Equipment: Reliable WiFi Connection
  • Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 8:30am-5pm.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
