Internships at Planet:

Planet’s Summer 2024 internships are full-time, paid 12-week positions located in our San Francisco HQ Office.

Program Dates:

  • May 28th - August 16th
  • June 10th - August 30th

About the Role:

The Mechanical Engineering team at Planet is seeking a Mechanical Engineer Intern to help drive the design of key spacecraft subsystems across Planet’s fleet of Earth-imaging satellites. As an intern you will support the ME team in spacecraft design and testing efforts. Under the mentorship of senior MEs and working cross-functionally with structural analysis, thermal engineering, and the reliability & qualification teams, you will be a contributor in Planet's agile aerospace approach to spacecraft design.

Impact You’ll Own:

  • Provide support to design, engineering, prototyping, production, and validation activities for various programs at Planet
  • Assist in developing and executing engineering and production tests to drive mechanical design and manufacturing process improvements
  • Design and build test fixtures to support various space hardware programs
  • Document and present work to multi-disciplinary collaborators and leadership

What You Bring:

  • Pursuing a BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or similar
  • Experience with Solidworks, geometric tolerancing, design for manufacture (DFM), Raspberry Pi/Arduino, prototyping (machine shop, 3d printing, etc.)
  • Analytical/problem solving skills and ability to use statistical tools and techniques
  • Organization, planning, communication, and time management skills
  • Interest in working on high-reliability, space qualified hardware

What Makes You Stand Out:

  • Working toward a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering or other related engineering or science degree
  • Proficiency in Python, Matlab, Visual Basic, and/or C
  • Coursework or project history where you designed, built and tested an idea that you can discuss in depth
  • A fascination with space and an eagerness to tackle the unique engineering challenges presented by its dynamic conditions

EAR/ITAR Requirements:

This position requires access to export-controlled technology, and as such, and in accordance to applicable law, employment is only open to US citizens, US nationals, lawful permanent residents of the US or persons admitted to the US as an asylee or refugee.

Compensation:

The US hourly rate range for this position at the commencement of employment is $35 - $60. The final salary range is determined by job related experience, skills and location. The range displays our typical hiring range for new hire salaries in US locations only.
