About This role:

The IP Professional will be responsible for providing timely and effective support for patent and trademark matters for Carrier, preparing and filing all necessary documents with the USPTO, docketing deadlines, and interacting with inventors, attorneys/agents, and with outside counsel. This role will provide support to other paralegal roles in the IP department, and assist with administrative and legal tasks as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare documentation necessary to file patent applications and corresponding prosecution with the USPTO and foreign patent offices, and filing of US patent applications.
  • Draft and file various correspondence and standard responses with the USPTO, and direct outside counsel for filing of corresponding applications in foreign patent offices.
  • Monitor and docket office actions and correspondence received from and sent to the USPTO and foreign patent offices on daily basis.
  • Correspond with patent search vendors for patentability, invalidity, and freedom-to-operate searches, coordinating the results with the invention disclosure process, and docketing the activities.
  • Process inventor compensation and patent plaques in accordance with company policy.
  • Manage the annuity payment process, including obtaining instructions from attorneys and updating annuity decisions, as needed.
  • Audit the trademark portfolio to ensure accuracy of data (incl. status, ownership, list of goods, dates, and registration numbers).
  • Coordinate with business units to obtain necessary documents (such as specimens of use, ownership information, declarations, power of attorneys, etc.) to support the patent and trademark acquisition and maintenance process.
  • Provide support to the IP staff as needed.
  • Learn and implement current intellectual property department tools and processes, and working willingly with members of Intellectual Property Department with goal of continuous improvement of department processes.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 3 + years of working knowledge with USPTO and foreign patent filing practices and procedures

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent organizational skills and follow-up skills are required.
  • Ability to prioritize needs and work independently.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Preferred expertise in the Anaqua docketing and matter management tool (or similar type IP management system) used by the Intellectual Property group, including experience in docketing for a large corporation's patent/trademark portfolios.
