About the Role

As Medical Director at Wheel you will be responsible for 3 main areas of Wheel’s clinical operations: Care Programs, Clinical Operations, and Clinical Quality and Compliance. The Medical Director will develop care programs, oversee all clinical operations, and provide direction for clinical quality and compliance at Wheel. In addition, The Medical Director will also be responsible for the evaluation of medical practitioners; assessing clinical quality and ensuring quality of medical care and for quality assessment.

What You’ll Do

Care Programs

  • Spearhead and lead the end-to-end development of patient care programs across current and future treatment areas; from framework design, and outcomes measurement, to implementation.

  • Provide day-to-day clinical guidance internally across the organization, working closely with Operations, Product, Commercial, and Executive Leadership teams to define, build, and execute a unified clinical strategy.

  • Partner with Wheel’s digital product team to provide clinical expertise on product strategy and development; ensure platform capabilities lead to better patient outcomes.

Clinical Operations

  • Provide leadership to the Clinical Operations Team.

  • Ensure the recruitment training and key performance metrics for clinical teams, including RN support and Clinician Champions.

  • Ensure availability and performance of key 3rd party systems for clinical operations.

Clinical Quality and Compliance

  • Develop frameworks and procedures to optimize Wheel’s clinical workflows and care programs over time; including but not limited to identifying, implementing, and tracking patient and clinical outcomes metrics across care programs and using data to drive and deploy iterative improvements.

  • Manage Wheel’s clinical patient safety escalation protocols and active escalations, ensuring Wheel’s clinical standards and quality are consistent and on target.

  • Collaborate with legal and compliance teams to address any regulatory challenges and ensure ongoing compliance. Provide guidance on clinical governance and best practices for compliantly treating patients.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Create a path of escalation for approving new clinical requirements or protocols in solution design.

  • Ensures appropriate clinical quality programs and measures tracking and reporting of internal stakeholders and externally to clients.

  • Review escalations for clinical quality and ensure remediation meets severity level.

  • Be the reviewer/approver of new care and training programs.

  • Tactfully handle interactions with clinicians and address emergent issues as needed.

  • Formulate strategies and protocols to prevent potential challenges and to streamline any potential clinical challenges when they arise.

Who You Are

  • Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited institution.

  • Board certification in internal medicine or family practice. Primary care experience preferred.

  • Minimum of 12 years of clinical practice experience, with a strong preference for candidates with experience in virtual care or telemedicine.

  • Previous leadership experience in a clinical or healthcare management role inclusive of telemedicine as the predominant practice method.

  • Experience working with digital product and technical teams preferred.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.

  • Ability to pass NCQA Credentialing and Wheel standardized background checks required.

  • Active Medical License in good standing in 1 or more states. Preference is multi-state licensure.

  • Ability to blend medical knowledge and experience with business knowledge and experience to create unique strategies for the clinical organization as required.
