Job Description

The Show

The Journal is a daily narrative news podcast made in partnership between Spotify and the Wall Street Journal. Each day, we tell one important news story in 15-20 minutes. Our show focuses on money and business, applying those lenses to general news or zooming in on business stories that other outlets do not tell. We have covered everything from the popularity of Zyn, the resurrection of Abercrombie and the many businesses of Elon Musk. We’ve published revealing investigations into Facebook and the telehealth company Cerebral alongside the Wall Street Journal’s print paper.

The Job

This role is for an experienced producer who likes working on news-driven stories. We’re looking for someone who is experienced in fast turnaround production, enthusiastic about the Wall Street Journal’s reporting, and excited about storytelling and explanatory podcasts. The job involves pitching story ideas, arranging interviews, cutting multiple tracks of tape, writing tight narration, structuring stories into a clear narrative, and finding compelling ways to tell daily news stories. While this role is set for normal work hours, it also requires flexibility and openness to weekend and after-hours work.

What You'll Do

  • Pitch story ideas relevant to the news cycle that can be accomplished within a tight timeline, and pitch occasional longer-term projects!
  • Book, prep for, record, and produce interviews with sources inside and outside of the Journal
  • Write scripts and structure narratives for episodes
  • Record and produce field reporting trips
  • Log, cut, and arrange tape, build assemblies, score moments, and everything else production requires
  • Maintain strong working relationships with the Wall Street Journal’s reporters, editors, and managerial staff
  • Balance multiple episodes in production at the same time
  • Work both independently and collaboratively, depending on the task

Who You Are

  • 4+ years producing audio in a high-caliber, high-output organization
  • Experience using audio editing software
  • A passion for the work of the Journal specifically and business news generally
  • Enthusiasm for a high-intensity daily production schedule
  • Daily experience is a huge plus

Where You'll Be

  • This is a full-time role based anywhere in North America, working East coast hours.
  • This is a full-time role currently being done remotely. This role is in a collective bargaining unit that is represented by the Writers Guild of America East. Our recruitment team can answer any questions you may have about this representation. The base salary for this role is $95,000 USD
To apply, please submit your resume and two short pitches for episodes of The Journal. These don’t need to be full episode outlines, but rather a short paragraph (3-4 sentences) for each pitch explaining what angle you would take, whose voice you’d want to hear in the piece, and why you think it’s right for The Journal. These can be based on Wall Street Journal stories, though that is not a requirement.
