The Role: People Strategy & Operations Manager

Location: Remote, San Francisco, CA

As the People Strategy & Operations Manager, you will support and own a portfolio of work that cuts across organizational effectiveness, team member engagement, talent strategy, and the HR technical stack that connects and accelerates Hazel team members in their ability to deliver exceptional service and partnership to students, families, and school communities. Leveraging insights from and in collaboration with your People Team and cross-functional colleagues, you will hone our Hazel Team Member Value Proposition (TMVP) and ensure that our company’s policies and practices stay true to, align with, and reinforce our Value Proposition every day. You have experience designing, implementing, and owning high-quality systems, programming, and communications that help a company hum and be its best self. At work, you are the project manager that everyone is excited to partner with, and at home, you are the family member who gets tapped to plan big vacations and the friend who reviews those hard-to-write emails. You excel at distilling, empathizing, and threading the needle across high-level management objectives and on-the-ground frontline efforts, because you’ve worn multiple hats in your career and believe deeply in the power and potential of a positive, aligned, and connected work community.

The People Strategy & Operations Manager reports to Hazel’s People Strategy & Operations Director and is a key member of the People Team. The position will ideally be located in the San Francisco Bay Area though remote locations will be considered (please see below for additional details).

What You’ll Do:

  • In partnership with the Director, People Team, Chief of Staff, and cross-functional leaders, support the implementation of a company-wide communications and programmatic strategy that enables team members to authentically connect with Hazel’s TMVP and each other in service of and in alignment with our mission, business objectives, tactical rhythm, and company milestones.
  • Alongside the TMVP, develop a deep understanding of Hazel’s business, product, and delivery models, and leverage best-in-class communication practices to engage current and prospective team members across multiple channels and modalities.
  • Support Hazel’s organizational convenings, inclusive of virtual All-Hands meetings, in-person Summits, and other online and in-person events and meetings, by delivering on logistical, operational, and strategic needs on time, on budget, and with detailed precision, including but not limited to booking and negotiating venue, lodging and food; planning space against meeting itinerary and aims; managing budgets and requisite documentation, ordering and maintaining event supplies and materials, and serving as the main point-of-contact before, during and after major convenings.
  • Coach, develop, and laterally manage cross-functional team members to execute People Team programming, fostering an intentionally inclusive, equitable, and collaborative team culture that puts the team member experience at the forefront.
  • Serve as an internal advisor to People Business Partners and organizational leaders by actively maintaining knowledge of trends, developments, and best practices on team member belonging, retention, morale, recognition, productivity, and incentives.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to evolve existing practices and introduce new initiatives, marshall resources, and manage change to strengthen Hazel’s community and culture.
  • Own a portfolio of People Team priority initiatives, for example: project managing Hazel’s HCM RFP and implementation, managing and evolving Hazel’s biannual Engagement Survey, developing and maintaining a People Team analytics dashboard, or supporting a talent development pilot.

What Excites Us:

  • 5/+ years of professional experience in People & Culture, Organizational Effectiveness, and/or Organizational Development/Change Management; bonus if experience intersects with healthcare, direct services, and/or start-up company.
  • Demonstrated experience translating strategic vision into detail-oriented programmatic execution plans, ideally inclusive of large-scale events, technology, and complex organizational communications.
  • A high degree of organization and ability to fluidly manage documents and processes in Google Suite, Slack, and other digital-first tools.
  • Conscientious problem solver, fixer, and resource finder with an elevated level of productive paranoia; ability to defuse and resolve conflict in moments of tension.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities—supporting a team member, preparing for a training, entering data—gracefully and with practiced personal organization and time management.
  • Excellent communication skills, and the ability to communicate expectations clearly up, down, and laterally with confidence and professionalism with contacts ranging from external vendors to the CEO.
  • Strong judgment and critical reasoning skills, with the ability to navigate new situations.
  • Strength in coaching, empowering, and leading others in formal and informal capacities.
  • Enthusiasm for a team-based work environment.
  • A sense of humor, a willingness to embrace both your own quirks and others’, and a passion and commitment to put team members at the center of everything we do.
  • Ability to regularly move boxes, equipment, and materials up to 25 pounds before, during, and after convenings.
  • Hold a BA or BS.
