Job Description

About Forterra

Forterra is a leading provider of autonomous systems for ground-based movement in the working world. Amongst some of the earliest innovators in the field of driverless technology, Forterra is focused on building systems that protect front-line soldiers and enable civilian workers in our industrial base. Forterra is the go-to provider of ground autonomy solutions for the U.S. Department of Defense, which harnesses the technology for asymmetric warfare in critical conditions.

About the role

  • Forterra is seeking an experienced State Estimation Engineer to join our team in developing innovative tracking and filtering algorithms for autonomous systems. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in designing and developing Bayesian filtering algorithms in multiple sensor domains and running on hardware operating in varied environments under real-time constraints.

What you'll do

  • Design and develop object tracking and Bayesian filtering algorithms in multiple sensor domains: camera, LiDAR, radar.
  • Mature the perception software stack and architecture, focusing on the components relevant to dynamic object tracking and state estimation more broadly.
  • Stay up-to-date with academic research and industry trends as relates to object tracking and filtering.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to leveling up their skills.

Qualifications

  • BS, MS, or PhD in computer science, electrical engineering, robotics, mathematics, or related field, or with
  • equivalent industrial experience.
  • 4+ years of similar academic and/or professional working experience.
  • What We Love to See:
  • Experience with deploying state estimation algorithms into latency-constrained on-road and off-road
  • environments.
  • Experience with ROS, Eigen, PCL/Open3D, OpenCV, Docker.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure and AWS in particular.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with building and using Kalman filters: EFKs/UKFs, particle filters, and SLAM across multiple sensor domains: camera, LiDAR, radar.
  • Solid understanding of the mathematics behind with Bayesian state estimation and sensor fusion.
  • Excellent programming skills in modern C++ and Python.
  • Excellent core software engineering fundamentals: software design, containerization, unit testing, and debugging.
  • Experience with delivering production-quality software in a continuously integrated environment using test-driven development patterns.
