About the role

The Senior Counsel is a key member of the Legal team responsible for driving and executing the organization’s legal strategy, counseling teams and leaders on legal obligations, advising on strategy, and providing thought leadership to further Oscar’s success in their area. This position works closely with Oscar’s departmental and company leadership teams. This role may have one or more direct reports, and is responsible for the identification and development of talent within their area.

You will report to the Associate General Counsel.

If you live within commutable distance to our New York City office ( in Hudson Square), our Tempe office (off the 101 at University Ave), or our Los Angeles office (in Marina Del Rey), you will be expected to come into the office at least two days each week. Otherwise, this is a remote / work-from-home role.

You must reside in one of the following states: Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, or Washington, D.C. Note, this list of states is subject to change.

Pay Transparency:

The base pay for this role in the states of California, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Washington is: $192,000 - 252,000 per year. The base pay for this role in all other locations is: $172,200 - 226,800 per year. You are also eligible for employee benefits, participation in Oscar's unlimited vacation program company equity grants and annual performance bonuses.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with key business partners to develop a cohesive and comprehensive legal strategy that aligns with the organization’s strategic business objectives
  • Effectively execute on the organization’s legal strategy and ensure that a variety of complex legal matters are managed in a cost-effective manner
  • Analyze and distill complex legal issues into easily understandable content so Oscar can move corporate goals and objectives forward
  • Serve as the national subject matter expert for one or more legal areas critical to the business enterprise
  • Provide day-to-day legal advice related to Oscar’s leadership, departments, and lines of business
  • Manage a team of legal professionals and ensure the team is appropriately staffed and resourced to manage the Company’s legal needs. Identify and develop talent within the team to ensure strong output and succession
  • Engage cross-functionally to ensure the organization has the systems, processes and operations to effectively respond to legal matters
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive budget
  • Develop and maintain metrics which demonstrate trends on the organizations’ legal activities
  • Act as lead counsel for the organization on high profile and material legal matters
  • Serve as legal advisor on matters before state and federal bodies as necessary
  • Compliance with all applicable laws and regulations
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Attorney in good standing with J.D. from an ABA accredited law school
  • Law license in good standing and the ability to register as In-House Counsel in NY State (NY bar admission is not required)
  • 10+ years of relevant experience at a top tier law firm, in-house counsel, and/or insurance regulatory agency

Bonus Points

  • Litigation experience in Florida, California, Texas, and/or New York jurisdictions
  • Experience with startups

Pay Transparency:

Final offer amounts, within the base pay set forth above, are determined by factors including your relevant skills, education, and experience.
