Senior Data Engineer

The Senior Data Engineer has the unique opportunity to help lead enterprise data solutions with Snowflake and Azure within American Public Education, Inc. (APEI). The successful candidate is responsible for analyzing data requirements, data models, and developing solutions for the Enterprise Data Warehouse, Data Marts, Operational Data Stores, and Enterprise Reporting and Analytic initiatives. She/he will have experience with data profiling/deduplication techniques, Master Data Management, Data Governance, with multiple back-end languages, scripting, API development, and custom plugins and tools.

The Sr. Data Engineer will closely with business and IT team members to develop, optimize, and maintain the data pipelines and supporting the build of the data ecosystem for delivering enterprise data for wide consumption including developing data models, corresponding data architecture documents and API's. She/he may be responsible for leading data engineering initiatives, partner with IT and other Business teams, and identify, define, analyze, and implement data solutions with high scalability, performance, and 24x7 availability.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Must have deep hands-on experience delivering and implementing data lake/warehouse, business intelligence, and data integration on-premises and Cloud-based technologies with RDBMS, ETL/ELT, and BI; such as MS SQL Server, SSIS, SSRS, MicroStrategy, Power BI; Snowflake and Azure experience required.
  • Analyzes data requirements and develops data models, ETL, and related solutions to support EDW, DM, ODS and Enterprise Reporting and Analytics initiatives.
  • Participates in database design discussions, collaborating with architects and reporting specialists to ensure the database designs are accurate and that they support efficient reporting.
  • Develops, validates, and maintains ETL architecture and designs for accuracy and performance, identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Analyzes the impact of source system data design changes as they relate to existing ETL solutions and makes appropriate changes to existing ETL solutions.
  • Performs data analysis, profiling, understands source data, and designs ETL solutions to accommodate nuances, prevent data redundancy or integrity across systems.
  • Employs best practices and an enterprise-wide approach to data warehouse and ETL designs.
  • Assists with Master Data Management, preference given to Boomi Data Hub.
  • May lead data solutions development, design, and reviews.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 8+ years of experience in data analysis, data modeling, and developing integration solutions for the Enterprise Data Warehouse/Marts/Operational Data Stores and experience with Snowflake and Azure Data Lake.
    Demonstrates competence, experience, knowledge, and understanding of data architecture and administration concepts, including dimensional modeling, ETL/ELT, views, and advanced SQL functions.
  • Solid data modeling experience and loading with transactional and dimensional systems.
  • Strong Snowflake, Azure, Microsoft SQL development experience writing complex SQL queries, scripts, stored procedures, and ETL/ELT processes.
  • Excellent data acquisition, profiling, transformation, and loading experience with standard and cloud-based tools, preferred with Microsoft SSIS and Power BI.
  • Well experienced with data and integration troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Extensive experience querying multiple data sources and platforms preferred, especially SQL Server.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps, Visual Studio, Python, Spark, and BI tools such as MicroStrategy, SSRS, and Power BI.
  • Experience with data modeling tools, Master Data Management, preferably Boomi MDM.
  • Experience with ERwin, ER/Studio or similar data modeling tools.
  • Experience developing/analyzing stored procedures and relational database programming.
  • Ability to be flexible and think strategically in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Ability to quickly digest information and understand the business objective.
  • Displays strong responsibility and attention to detail, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities with a positive attitude.
  • Excellent initiative, organization, and ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Bachelors degree preferred
