Position Summary:
The primary responsibility of the Senior Medical Writer II (SMW II) is to ensure that all content developed is evidence-based, is of the highest editorial quality, meets the strategic objectives of our clients, and ultimately translates science into clinical benefit. The SMW II is expected to function very independently, with collaborative oversight from a scientific director (SD), and to be able to effectively coordinate with all team members to drive projects to efficient completion. Furthermore, the SMW II is an established leader of their team, working closely with SDs, SADs, and PMs to improve team functioning, enhance strategic services delivery, and ensure the creation of content deliverables meeting the highest industry standards.
Specific Responsibilities and Skills:
Content Development
- Display excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Write to the standards, format, and requirements of our clients
- Engage in detail-oriented approaches, supporting the creation of complete, thorough, and accurate content
- Complete all elements required by team and client, such as speaker notes, references, annotations, etc
- Organize and annotate references in accordance with internal standards and client requirements
- Conduct effective literature searches and identify project-related key data and/or information
- Interpret and apply clinical and preclinical data from complex tables and graphs with ease
- Learn new subject areas quickly according to business needs
- Develop multiple drafts of content in various forms up to and including the final draft that is submitted for dissemination and/or publication
- Including, but not limited to outlines, slide decks, speaker notes, manuscripts, monographs, executive summaries, and meeting materials
- Implement internal and external comments and feedback thoroughly and effectively; other internal team members such as the overseeing SD should be able to review with confidence
- Understand and apply the strategic imperatives of the client to content development
- Includes the development of outlines with a clearly highlighted story arc
Internal and External Collaboration
- Display excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills
- Interface with internal team members as required in order to support a mutual understanding of project objectives, timing expectations, and next steps
- Provide clear direction and collaborate effectively with the Editorial and Creative staff
- Confidently balance multiple tasks and multiple priorities
- Understand and plan around budgeted projects hours; efficiently complete work within the allotted time
- Work closely and effectively with internal reviewers (eg, SD/SAD) to meet the standards and expectations of our company and our clients
- Manage projects effectively and collaborate with internal teams on next steps, not requiring substantial SD oversight
- Work with minimal supervision, including consistently managing own work load and priorities
- Proactively identify issues and potential pitfalls; propose solutions and make defensible judgment calls that will meet with the approval of the internal team and clients
- Interact with clients and external experts in various formats, such as live meetings, teleconferences, and webinars
- Lead content-related discussions with clients and external experts, sometimes in conjunction with the SAD/SD, but also be able to manage these conversations independently
- Lead the internal team in the medical/legal/regulatory review process, including answering queries, understanding the changes required, and guiding the internal team on implementing these changes
Developed Leadership Skills
- Serve as an established leader of team, including deep collaboration with Accounts, Program, Editorial, and Creative
- Lead and direct project development in collaboration with SD and other internal team members
- Lead internal long-term planning (resourcing, PTO coverage, project timing) in conjunction with Accounts and Program
- Work with the SD to improve efficiency and other aspects of content team functioning
- Mentor junior MWs, including training on process and initial first-pass review of content
- Keep up-to-date with clinical, technological, and business developments in relevant therapeutic areas
- Provide scientific and “light” strategic support for business development activities and organic client opportunities
Required Processes and Tools
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Word®, PowerPoint®, Excel®, Adobe Acrobat®, and reference-management software (eg, RefMan or EndNote®), as required by specific team need
- Proficiency with PubMed and other literature search tools
- Ability to quickly learn and apply relevant style guides, including the AMA Manual of Style
- Consistent and effective use of communication tools such as Workzone and Teams for internal trafficking and collaboration
- Timely completion of training assignments, PTO planning, and individual evaluations in systems such as ADP, Halogen, and Unanet
Qualifications
- Advanced life sciences degree: MD, PhD, PharmD, MS, MPH, and other post-graduate qualifications may also be considered if relevant
- 2+ years relevant professional experience (communication agency or other exposure to similar medical education deliverables)
