As a member of the Global Technology Services (GTS) division, you will contribute to all aspects of the technology products and services we deliver, from technical strategy and design to coding to deployment to operation. Our GTS products and services are leveraged across all Business Unit Platforms within the Bank to deliver industry-leading software including: CommBank App, Netbank, CommSee, CommSec, CommBiz and Commbank.com.au.

As a Senior Systems Engineer within the Virtual Hosting Crew you will contribute to the safe, sound and secure delivery and operation of infrastructure and PaaS services hosted within our on premise data centres. You will support, engineer, and run world class products and services.

Overall, to be successful in this role you will:

  • Collaborate with platform engineering squads to enhance system reliability, performance, and scalability through the implementation of DevOps & SRE type practices.
  • Design, implement, and maintain automation software to continuous integrate, deploy, monitor, and respond to incidents, ensuring high availability and optimal performance.
  • Develop and implement infrastructure-as-code (IaC) solutions using differing tools and software, ensuring consistent and reproducible infrastructure deployments.
  • Implement monitoring and logging solutions to proactively identify and address potential issues, optimizing platform performance and reliability.
  • Lead efforts to establish and improve monitoring and alerting systems, utilizing tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, to identify and address platform performance issues proactively.
  • Conduct post-incident reviews, analyse system failures, and implement preventative measures to mitigate future incidents.
  • Collaborate with security teams to integrate security best practices into the CI/CD pipelines, platform, and applications.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and respond to incidents promptly, working towards resolution and contributing to the continuous improvement of system reliability.
  • Participate in on-call rotations, responding to incidents, conducting root cause analysis, and implementing preventive measures.

We’re interested in hearing from people who have worked as an Engineer/Developer with experience in domain such as:

  • Technology start-ups.
  • Financial sector.
  • Software and cloud service providers.
  • Systems Integrators, and service providers.
  • Telecommunications.
  • Large complex environments and businesses, from a people processes and technology aspect.

Tech skills

We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. We don’t expect you to know them all but experience or exposure with some of these (or equivalents) will set you up for success in this team;

  • Kubernetes clusters, and operations.
  • Linux O/S.
  • Ceph and MinIO cloud native storage and Linux engineering and tools.
  • Automation tools such as Ansible, Terraform.
  • Source control, and CI/CD tooling such as GitHub, GitHub actions, Jenkis, and Argo CD.
  • Go/Java languages, Bash/Python scripting.
  • VMware solutions.
  • AVI load balancing.
  • Cloud Native network policy such as Calcio.
  • Infrastructure as code pipelines and automation.
  • PowerDNS.
  • Observability with Grafana and Prometheus.
  • General Networking protocols and architectures.
