Business Insider is hiring a fellow to join our West Coast/Weekends team to write impactful business, tech, and innovation stories and cover breaking news.

The Business Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This paid role requires you to work for 40 hours a week and can be remote.

The Role & Team:
The West Coast/Weekend Desk’s mission is to cover business, tech, and innovation stories along with big breaking general news that serves our disruptive go-getter audience during off hours (Friday - Tuesday from 4 p.m. ET - 12 a.m. ET).
The fellow will cover everything from off-hours breaking news developments across a range of topics to in-depth reporting explaining the companies, people, and trends at the biggest companies in tech and business. They will spend their time doing meaningful work: researching, writing, pitching, and covering breaking news such as major geopolitical news, earnings reports/calls from the biggest companies shaping the global economy, and writing analysis stories that push the news forward and provide important context for the reader on those topics. We are especially looking for someone who can synthesize the latest news and numbers and write voice-y, informed takes on the issues of the day.
This role reports to our West Coast editor and should be based on the West Coast.
Key Responsibilities:
- Pitch and publish a mix of quick hits and analysis every week
- Identify trends with the biggest business, retail, and tech companies and analyze how they affect Silicon Valley, the world markets, and Americans’ lives
- Interview sources ranging from experts on the companies we follow to experts on politics and other major events
- Keep an eye on global breaking news, with an emphasis on business, tech, and innovation news that Business Insider would send out a push alert to our readers or would share on our homepage
The ideal candidate has:
- A keen eye for important and timely business, tech, and innovation developments and how they impact the economy, employees at those companies, and consumers
- The ability to break down complex topics and explain them clearly and in a conversational tone
- A broad knowledge base spanning the business, tech, and innovation spheres
- A curiosity to dive into any big breaking news
- A go-getter attitude and excitement to call sources, whether it’s for an attempted assassination or a major IPO
Additionally, all of our editorial fellows should have:
- A passion for digital storytelling and voracious reading habits
- Familiarity with digital and social media
- The ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
- Proofreading and copyediting skills
- A love of Business Insider and our mission to serve readers with the information and inspiration they need in a way that’s accurate, fair, fast, and fun
- Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
- PTO and paid holidays
- Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment
