Remote Work in Georgia

Georgia's economic history spans from colonial-era cotton plantations to one of the most dynamic regional economies in the modern South. Cotton dominated for nearly two centuries — the invention of the cotton gin by Eli Whitney in 1793 (while visiting a Georgia plantation) made large-scale cotton farming profitable and entrenched the state's agricultural economy through the Civil War. After Reconstruction, Atlanta began its rise as a regional commercial center, a transformation accelerated by its position as a railroad hub connecting the South's major corridors.

The Coca-Cola Company, founded in Atlanta in 1886 by pharmacist John Pemberton, became arguably the most famous brand in the world and a cornerstone of Atlanta's corporate identity. The company's global headquarters remains in Atlanta, and its cultural influence on the city — through philanthropy, civic investment, and talent attraction — has been profound. CNN, founded by Ted Turner in Atlanta in 1980, reinforced the city's identity as a media capital, a role further expanded by the growth of Tyler Perry Studios and Georgia's emergence as one of the top film and television production states in the country.

The film tax credit program Georgia adopted in 2008 transformed the state into "the Hollywood of the South." Marvel Studios, Netflix, and dozens of other production companies shoot major projects in Georgia, and the film industry now employs tens of thousands of Georgians in production, set design, logistics, and adjacent services.

Delta Air Lines, headquartered at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (the world's busiest by passenger volume), is one of Georgia's largest private employers. The Home Depot, NCR, UPS, and Norfolk Southern are among the other Fortune 500 companies with Georgia headquarters, making the state one of the densest concentrations of major corporate headquarters in the South.

Remote work has reshaped Georgia's talent geography. Atlanta has long attracted talent from across the Southeast, but remote work has allowed workers throughout the state — in Savannah, Augusta, Columbus, and rural areas — to access Atlanta-caliber or national-caliber salaries without relocating. Georgia's strong university system (Georgia Tech, University of Georgia, Georgia State) produces a steady stream of engineering and business graduates who increasingly seek remote or hybrid roles. The state's relatively low cost of living outside of Atlanta proper and its warm climate make it a compelling destination for remote workers relocating from more expensive coastal metros.
