Coal mining shaped eastern Kentucky's economy from the late nineteenth century through the late twentieth, with companies like CONSOL Energy, Alpha Natural Resources, and Arch Coal extracting Appalachian coal that powered industrial America. The decline of coal has been economically devastating for eastern Kentucky communities, driving significant outmigration and poverty in a region that once supported large working-class populations.

Louisville is Kentucky's economic anchor, home to Humana (one of the nation's largest health insurers), Kindred Healthcare, Yum! Brands (owner of KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell), and a major UPS Worldport air hub that processes millions of packages daily.
