New Hampshire occupies a unique economic position in New England — a small state with no income tax and no sales tax that has used those fiscal advantages to attract businesses, residents, and remote workers from across the region and the country. The "Live Free or Die" state's low-tax philosophy is not merely a slogan; it has been a governing economic principle that has shaped development patterns, business location decisions, and population growth for decades.

New Hampshire's industrial roots run deep. The Merrimack Valley textile mills of Manchester and Nashua were among the largest in the world in the nineteenth century. The Amoskeag Manufacturing Company in Manchester, at its peak, operated the largest textile complex on earth, stretching more than a mile along the Merrimack River and employing 17,000 workers. The decline of New England textiles in the early twentieth century hit Manchester hard, but the city reinvented itself as a diversified manufacturing and service center over subsequent decades.

High technology arrived in New Hampshire in the Route 128 spillover of the 1970s and 1980s, when Digital Equipment Corporation, Compaq, and other minicomputer companies set up facilities in the southern tier. The state's proximity to Boston — Manchester is less than an hour from downtown Boston — made it attractive for companies seeking lower costs while maintaining access to the metro's labor market and airport. Today, companies like Segue Technologies, Oracle Dyn, and Ellucian have New Hampshire footprints, and the state's technology sector has grown steadily if modestly.

The healthcare sector is a major employer through systems like Dartmouth-Hitchcock (centered in Lebanon), Catholic Medical Center (Manchester), and Elliot Health System. Dartmouth College in Hanover is a world-class research university that generates biomedical and technology spinoffs, and its Tuck School of Business produces graduates who often stay in the region.

Defense is another anchor: BAE Systems has operated a major facility in Nashua since the 1950s, manufacturing electronic warfare systems and employing thousands of engineers. Segue and other defense tech firms have clustered around BAE.

Remote work has been particularly powerful in New Hampshire because of the combination of no income tax, low cost of living relative to Massachusetts, excellent schools, and genuine outdoor recreation. Southern New Hampshire — particularly Manchester, Nashua, and the seacoast around Portsmouth — has seen significant growth from Boston-area remote workers who keep their Massachusetts or national salaries while benefiting from New Hampshire's fiscal advantages.
