Ohio's economic history is a case study in American industrial might, decline, and reinvention. Cincinnati developed around the meatpacking, soap, and consumer goods industries of the nineteenth century. Procter & Gamble, founded in Cincinnati in 1837 as a soap and candle company, grew into one of the largest consumer goods companies in the world, with brands including Tide, Pampers, Gillette, and Crest. Kroger, founded in Cincinnati in 1883, is today one of the largest grocery retailers in the country. The city has successfully attracted technology companies including JPMorgan Chase technology centers, Oracle, and a growing startup community in the Short North and Italian Village neighborhoods.

Intel's announcement of a massive semiconductor manufacturing complex near Columbus in 2022 — potentially the largest investment in Ohio's history — promises to transform the region's technology sector in ways not seen since the auto industry's post-WWII expansion.
