Remote Work in Tennessee

Tennessee's economic identity spans several distinct traditions: the country music and entertainment economy of Nashville, the manufacturing and distribution powerhouse of the midstate and Appalachian corridors, and the outdoor and tourism economy anchored by Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The state has been one of the most consistent economic performers in the South over the past four decades, attracting major corporate investments while maintaining a cost structure that makes it competitive against more expensive metros.

Nashville's transformation from a regional capital known primarily for country music into a genuine American boomtown is one of the most dramatic urban economic stories of the early twenty-first century. Country music has always been the foundation — the Grand Ole Opry, established in 1927, made Nashville the center of American country music, and the Music Row corridor of studios, publishers, and labels has sustained a music industry of global significance. But Nashville's economy broadened dramatically in the 1990s and 2000s. Healthcare became the dominant sector: HCA Healthcare (Hospital Corporation of America), the largest for-profit hospital company in the country, is headquartered in Nashville. Community Health Systems, Envision Healthcare, Change Healthcare, and dozens of smaller healthcare companies followed, making Nashville the "Healthcare Capital of the United States."

Manufacturing is deeply embedded in Tennessee's economy. Volkswagen built a major assembly plant in Chattanooga in 2011, producing the Passat and Atlas models and eventually committed to electric vehicle production there. Nissan's North American headquarters and a major assembly plant are in Smyrna. GM and Ford have historical and continuing manufacturing commitments in Tennessee. The auto industry supplier network has been a powerful employer across Middle Tennessee.

Memphis, Tennessee's largest city by population, is a global logistics powerhouse. FedEx, founded by Fred Smith in Memphis in 1971, is one of the most important logistics companies in the world and the city's largest employer. The Memphis hub — where FedEx processes millions of packages every night — is one of the busiest air cargo facilities on earth. The Port of Memphis is a major Mississippi River shipping terminal, and the city's central location and logistics infrastructure have attracted Amazon, Nike, and dozens of other distribution operations.

Remote work has been transformative in Tennessee because the state has no income tax, an increasingly sophisticated urban infrastructure in Nashville and Knoxville, and housing costs that are a fraction of the coastal cities from which many relocators are coming. Nashville in particular has seen extraordinary growth from remote workers, and the challenge has become managing growth rather than attracting it.
