Nashville's transformation from a regional capital known primarily for country music into a genuine American boomtown is one of the most dramatic urban economic stories of the early twenty-first century. Country music has always been the foundation — the Grand Ole Opry, established in 1927, made Nashville the center of American country music, and the Music Row corridor of studios, publishers, and labels has sustained a music industry of global significance. But Nashville's economy broadened dramatically in the 1990s and 2000s. The Memphis hub — where FedEx processes millions of packages every night — is one of the busiest air cargo facilities on earth.
