Remote Work in Vermont

Vermont is the second-smallest state by population in the country, yet its economic and cultural influence has consistently exceeded its size, particularly in areas related to artisanal food, sustainable agriculture, outdoor recreation, and more recently, remote work. The state has always traded on its exceptional quality of life and environmental stewardship, positioning itself as a place where thoughtful, independent people come to live deliberately.

Vermont's nineteenth-century economy centered on sheep and dairy farming, supported by the state's rolling hills and reliable precipitation. Merino sheep were introduced in the early nineteenth century, and Vermont became a major wool producer until western competition and changing fashions ended that era. Dairy farming replaced sheep as the foundation of Vermont's agricultural economy in the late 1800s and has persisted, albeit in a consolidated and challenged form, to the present. Vermont's small, independent dairy farms have struggled against the economics of industrial dairy production, but the state's emphasis on quality — Ben & Jerry's (founded in Burlington in 1978), Cabot Creamery cooperative (founded 1919), and dozens of artisan cheese makers — has created a value-added food economy that commands premium prices globally.

The granite and marble industries shaped Vermont's physical landscape and export economy in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Vermont granite, quarried in Barre (sometimes called the "Granite Capital of the World"), built monuments, government buildings, and gravestones across the country. The Rock of Ages quarry in Barre, still operating today, is the largest deep-hole granite quarry in the world.

IBM entered Vermont in 1957, building a semiconductor manufacturing facility in Essex Junction that became the center of the company's disk drive and memory operations for decades. At its peak, IBM employed over 8,000 people in Vermont — an enormous employer in a small state. The facility changed hands multiple times (through GlobalFoundries and now Micron Technology, which is investing in expansion) and remains one of Vermont's largest industrial employers.

Outdoor recreation and tourism have become central to Vermont's economy. Stowe, Killington, Mad River Glen, and dozens of other ski areas anchor a winter tourism industry, while fall foliage, cycling, kayaking, and hiking attract visitors across the warmer months. The remote work era has been particularly powerful in Vermont, which created "Remote Worker Grants" of up to $7,500 for qualifying remote workers who relocate to the state. Burlington has a genuine startup ecosystem, and the combination of clean environment, small-town culture, and natural beauty makes Vermont a highly sought destination for remote professionals.
