Milwaukee was a major industrial city for much of the twentieth century, with heavy equipment, machine tools, and brewing driving its economy. Pabst Brewing, Miller Brewing (now MillerCoors), and Schlitz made Milwaukee one of the brewing capitals of the world in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries — "the beer capital of America" was no exaggeration.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison is a world-class research university with particular strengths in biology, chemistry, engineering, and medicine. The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) is among the most productive university technology transfer organizations in the country, having commercialized discoveries from vitamin D synthesis to CRISPR gene editing applications. Epic Systems, the dominant electronic health records company, is headquartered in Verona and employs roughly 10,000 people — making it one of the most important health IT companies in the world.
