Remote Work in Wyoming

Wyoming is the least populous state in the country and, in many ways, the most elemental — a vast high-altitude landscape of plains, mountains, geothermal features, and energy reserves that has defined one of the most distinctive economies in the American West. With fewer than 600,000 residents and an area larger than the United Kingdom, Wyoming's economy operates at a scale that makes every industry feel personal and every policy decision directly consequential.

Energy is Wyoming's dominant economic force by almost any measure. The state is the top coal producer in the country by a wide margin — the Powder River Basin in northeastern Wyoming holds the largest coal reserves in the United States, and companies like Peabody Energy, Arch Resources, and Cloud Peak Energy have extracted hundreds of millions of tons annually for decades. The coal is low-sulfur and ideally suited for power generation, making it competitive even as natural gas eroded coal's market share in electricity generation.

Oil and natural gas production are also significant. The Pinedale Anticline in Sublette County and the Jonah Field have been among the most productive natural gas plays in the country. Trona mining in Sweetwater County, near Green River, gives Wyoming 90 percent of the world's trona deposits — a mineral refined into soda ash used in glass, detergents, and chemicals. The world's largest trona mines operate there.

Cattle ranching has defined Wyoming's landscape and culture since the first drives up from Texas in the 1860s. Wyoming was one of the original cow country states, and ranching traditions — working cattle on vast open ranges, rodeo culture, the Wyoming Stock Growers Association (founded 1873, the oldest livestock trade group in the country) — remain central to the state's identity. The horse remains a practical tool on working ranches rather than merely a symbol.

Tourism is the third pillar. Yellowstone National Park, the world's first national park (established 1872), and Grand Teton National Park draw millions of visitors annually to Jackson Hole and the surrounding region. Jackson has become one of the wealthiest small towns in America, with property values and a cost of living that approach or exceed coastal resort towns. Cody, Lander, and other gateway communities support their own outdoor and tourism economies.

Remote work has begun to penetrate Wyoming meaningfully. The state has no state income tax, making it particularly attractive for high-earning remote workers. Cheyenne and Casper offer genuine affordability and infrastructure, while Jackson, despite its high costs, attracts tech professionals and finance workers who want luxury mountain living. Wyoming's wide-open spaces and outdoor lifestyle are a powerful draw for a certain type of remote worker seeking space, freedom, and genuine western living.
