Job Description

IAT Insurance Group has an immediate opening for a Catastrophe Modeling Analyst. The ideal candidate possesses a versatile analytical toolkit and is a relentless learner, team contributor, and diligent technical professional. The ideal candidate will be able to perform and support business analysis, including catastrophe modeling for existing and prospective direct and assumed reinsurance property lines of business across the entire IAT Insurance Group enterprise.

Ideally, this role will work a hybrid schedule from any of IAT's Office locations. The hybrid schedule reflects our values (thinking and acting like an owner, collaboration, and teamwork) as it requires working from the office with colleagues and other disciplines Monday through Wednesday, with the option of working remotely on Thursday and Friday. The role level (Associate Catastrophe Modeling Analyst or Analyst) will be determined based on the knowledge, skills, and experience demonstrated.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Estimate potential loss from simulated and actual (including real-time) natural peril disasters for individual risks and portfolios using catastrophe modeling software and related tools and approaches.
  • Identify risk exposure to natural peril hazards by performing loss and GIS/geospatial analyses.
  • Extract, evaluate, manipulate, implement, validate, document, and model input data from various sources to support analysis results reporting.
  • Support catastrophe risk exposure pricing, ratemaking, regulatory agency filings, underwriting, claims, exposure management, reinsurance treaty placements, etc.
  • Provide technical support for internal catastrophe modeling tools IAT underwriters and account managers utilize.
  • Continually advance understanding of all aspects of catastrophe models and related considerations by studying professional literature, technical documentation, and vendor presentations.
  • Develop and perform model and input data testing and validation as a key supporting function.
  • Participate in change/update management that impacts or is driven by tools, data, methodologies, technology, models, vendor platforms, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Must Have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and at least two years of experience or equivalent experience.
    • Equivalent experience is six or more years of appropriate experience, demonstrable aptitude, or skillset.
  • A strong desire to work in data manipulation, analysis, quantification, visualization, and reporting as a primary career focus.
  • Solid technical abilities working with data structures, manipulation/engineering, analysis, reporting, and visualization; programming and query languages; relational databases; and GIS/geospatial.
    • High proficiency in writing advanced SQL queries.
    • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and VBA.
  • High confidence in statistical calculations, probability, uncertainty, etc.
  • Motivation to lead as a creative, hands-on, open-minded, and inquisitive contributor who can significantly contribute to, maintain, optimize, and/or (re)design the team's operational capabilities, automation, internal and customer-facing tools, output, approaches, and knowledge.
  • Ability to enthusiastically engage in customer support and interactions.
  • To qualify, all applicants must be authorized to work in the United States and must not require, now or in the future, VISA sponsorship for employment purposes.

Preferred to Have:

  • A college degree in STEM.
  • Advanced skills in Python, R, or other analogous scripting language.
  • Two years of catastrophe, statistical, or other data modeling and analysis experience.
  • Experience with property (re)insurance industry catastrophe modeling platforms, such as Verisk (formerly AIR) Touchstone or Touchstone Re.
  • Industry experience with property (re)insurance.
  • Familiarity with writing and revising code in C#.
  • One or more of the following credentials: ISCM/iCAS, Verisk CEEM, RMS CCRA, CAS, The Institutes, etc.
