Overview:

WiredPeople is seeking to hire a Lead Genomic Epidemiologist Bioinformatician to help support genomic surveillance and outbreak investigations for pathogens of public health concern in Florida.

The Lead Genomic Epidemiologist Bioinformatician will work directly with the Bioinformatics Team, serving as the primary bioinformatician to support genomic surveillance and epidemiologic investigations for various pathogens of public health concern (e.g., foodborne, waterborne, vector-borne, hospital-associated infections, meningococcal disease, and respiratory disease). This position also will support various bioinformatics and genomic epidemiology activities to expand and enhance genomic epidemiology at the national level with collaborators, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL), and other state/local/territorial public health laboratories.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and execute whole-genome sequencing analysis, comparative genomic analysis, and other analytic research projects, establishing new standard operating procedures (SOPs) and developing custom genomic epidemiology bioinformatics pipelines/workflows.
  • Lead the selection and development of appropriate analysis techniques and measures and identify and implement the necessary software and databases to complete defined analytical tasks.
  • Lead the development, management, and curation of databases for analysis.
  • Lead the identification, implementation, and maintenance of data quality control, data submissions and management programs.
  • Provide telephonic and web based technical assistance to other bioinformaticians, laboratory staff, and epidemiologists on the use of complex data analysis techniques and methods.
  • Provide reports with analytical results from genomic surveillance and outbreak investigations to be disseminated to laboratory and epidemiological staff.
  • Lead the coordination with other bioinformaticians involved in analysis projects, including data sharing and engagement across multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Disseminate the results of research projects in a wide range of venues including publications, peer reviewed journals, summaries, manuscripts, special reports, and oral/poster.
  • Attend training workshops that have been approved to ensure your knowledge remains current. You will be responsible for traveling to all assigned locations. Provide a follow-up report within seven business days of training detailing training received.
  • Provide progress during in-person weekly task meeting with the supervisor. Provide a monthly written progress report summarizing development and status of tasks no later than the 7th day of the following month.

Qualifications and Experience:

Required:

  • A PhD in bioinformatics, genomic epidemiology, microbiology, virology, parasitology, evolutionary biology, microbial genetics, molecular biology, computer science, or related field.
  • At least five years of practical and technical experience in microbial and/or public health bioinformatics.
  • At least five years of experience with phylogenetics and comparative genomic analysis of microbial organisms.
