Job Summary:
Functions in a physician advisory capacity to support the objectives of the Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) program by performing documentation reviews to identify opportunities to best reflect the diagnoses and treatment of the patient, including appropriate severity of illness, expected risk of mortality, and complexity of care. Partners with CDI and Health Information Management (HIM) teams on the approach and plan to engage and educate physicians on key CDI concepts that will accurately reflect high quality care that justifies resource consumption and length of stay. Utilizes an influential and collaborative approach with members of the medical staff and CDI/HIM team to create awareness, understanding and support of the CDI program. Serves as a liaison between the members of the care team and CDI/HIM team.
Position Responsibilities:
Provides clinical support to CDI and HIM teams:
- Identifies documentation improvement opportunities.
- Provides insight on challenging documentation concepts.
- Performs documentation reviews on cases requiring additional physician input.
Accountable for physician engagement and education regarding CDI concepts. Partners with the CDI team to conduct regular outreach and education with the medical staff including onboarding, physician meetings, and individual discussions.
Supports the appeal process for clinical DRG downgrades by:
- Performing second level reviews
- Identifies clinical indicators to support validation of diagnoses.
- Formulates appeals and clinical responses to denials.
- Educates physicians as appropriate on techniques to improve documentation to prevent future denials.
Partners with CDI leadership on an approach and plan for physician responses to queries, including escalation assistance. This includes engaging the physician in 1:1 communication and identifying opportunities to establish best practices.
With CDI program leadership, reviews and analyzes data on outcomes, quality ratings, and case scenarios. Communicates outcomes and results to medical staff leadership.
Supports organizational quality initiatives by educating on various CDI concepts to accurately reflect high quality care and outcome measures.
Position Qualifications Required:
Required Experience:
2 years or more practicing as a physician specializing in inpatient hospital medicine (Hospitalist, ER, or medical sub specialist who concentrates on hospital medicine). Extensive knowledge of all of the medical specialties.
Required Education:
MD/DO degree.
Training / Certification / Licensure:
Current NJ Medical License required. Must be Board eligible or Board Certified in training specialty. Must be proficient in the use of technology to review clinical cases in EMR and document outcomes in CDI systems.
