Wirecutter is seeking a Software Engineer to collaboratively develop the digital platforms that enable our team to share our research and expertise, helping our millions of readers make informed buying decisions. As a Software Engineer, you will be a member of a team that includes other engineers, product managers, and users of our platforms. We focus on scale, reliability, performance and product agility, which means picking the right tool for the job, while also being flexible. You will report to our Engineering Manager, Product Platforms. Our mission is to be the most trusted and helpful recommendation service, and you will be a part of getting us there.

Wirecutter is powered by a modern web stack consisting of a variety of languages and frameworks including:

  • PHP and Laravel

  • React, TypeScript, Apollo, GraphQL, and NextJS

Responsibilities:

  • Complete clearly defined tasks that deliver features in multiple backend systems.

  • Triage and debug report issues, escalating as appropriate.

  • Assist in manual or automated testing of in-development features.

  • Apply best practices in your own code and how to communicate them in peer code reviews.

  • Follow established workflows and processes.

  • Communicate within the team and to partners.

Basic Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years of modern web stack programming experience, including:

    • Intermediate experience with PHP and Laravel; OR

    • Intermediate experience with React, TypeScript, and GraphQL.

  • One year of experience with source control, such as git, GitHub, or GitLab.

  • One year of experience with local development tooling, such as Docker and the command line.

  • Familiarity with or a desire to work remotely and asynchronously.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expert experience in PHP and Laravel OR expert experience in React, TypeScript, and GraphQL.

  • Previous experience developing within the Laravel framework.

  • Familiarity with Agile practices.

  • Experience communicating complex ideas in writing and in person.

The annual base pay range for this role is between:$104,000—$130,000 USD
