Overview:

FHI 360 has an exciting internship opportunity for a student interested in growing their skills within the international development sector. Under close supervision, an Intern will perform entry level professional duties which will provide the opportunity for professional training in various functional areas throughout the organization. Internship assignments serve to offer practical experience and broad exposure to a global nonprofit development organization.

This internship will provide an opportunity to work within FHI 360’s Product Development and Introduction department which is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of researchers and technical experts engaged in a range of activities including contraceptive research, development, and introduction with a focus on expanding access to populations in low- and middle-income countries. The Research and Communications Intern will support two projects, one funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the other by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Both projects seek to develop new contraceptives, modify existing contraceptives, and/or introduce contraceptives that are approved in high-income countries but have historically been inaccessible in low-income countries.

This is a paid internship with a flexible schedule based on project needs.

Anticipated Duration: September - December 2024

Hours: 8-10 hours / week

Pay Rate: $18.00/hour

Skills Gained and Learning Opportunities:

  • Practical experience with a large, global non-profit organization

  • Shadowing, mentoring, and training opportunities with successful research, technical, and/or program management professionals

  • Experience working with an inter-disciplinary team addressing global development challenges

  • Knowledge about contraceptive development and international family planning initiatives

  • Experience disseminating knowledge to support utilization of research findings

Anticipated Project(s) and Assignment Details:

The intern may contribute to various team or project activities under the direction of their supervisor in the following ways:

  • Contribute to research or project activities as assigned by supervisor

  • Conduct desk reviews, landscape analyses and/or secondary data analyses; example topics include contraceptive induced menstrual changes (CIMCs), youth engagement in contraceptive technology development, and successful models for introducing contraceptives in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs)

  • Contribute to project-related presentations, reports, newsletters, and social media posts

  • Develop content for the CTI Exchange (www.ctiexchange.com) and the Hormonal IUD Access Group (www.hormonalIUD.org) including writing blogs, updating the resources, contributing to development of webinars and/or supporting new social media campaigns

  • Contribute to activities for youth engagement in contraceptive R&D, including development and dissemination of a new departmental youth engagement strategy

  • Assist with project-related administrative tasks, as needed

Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Currently enrolled in or within one year of graduation from a degree program at a college or university with a focus on a field relevant to family planning, drug development, or health communications; e.g., international development, public health, public policy, business, bioengineering, biochemistry, biology, strategic communication

  • Demonstrated interest in family planning or related subject area through studies, work experience, and/or personal travel

  • Demonstrated experience in creating content for a variety of audiences through social media, newsletters, blogs, etc.

  • Energetic and eager to tackle new projects and ideas

  • Strong writing and research skills. Preference for experience writing manuscripts, peer-reviewed journals, data analysis, etc.

  • Articulate, professional, and able to communicate in a clear, positive manner

  • Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English

  • Ability to communicate in French preferred
