Job Expectations

Why nbn?

Would you like to join a company that’s redefining the future of Australia?

Are you interested in helping transform one of the largest and most complex regulated infrastructure initiatives ever undertaken in Australia into a customer-led telecommunications service company? Do you want to do interesting, complex and challenging work in a supportive environment with a great team of people?

If so, come and join the nbn Legal & Regulatoryteam. We are a collaborative team of high performing legal and regulatory practitioners from a mix of in-house and private practice backgrounds with significant breadth of experience and commercial nous. We have a clear vision and a common goal: to help nbn transform Australia’s digital landscape, enhance social connection and drive digital adoption and innovation.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Legal Counsel to join our Customer & Supply Legal Team. The Customer & Supply Legal Team provides legal advice and support to our business partners on all aspects of the development, supply and marketing of nbn’s products and services.

A bit about your role

You will be a senior member of the Customer & Supply Legal Team. You will be a trusted legal advisor to the team’s stakeholders and be responsible for providing commercial and practical legal support in a fast-paced, complex environment. You’ll work with a friendly and supportive team to take on engaging and exciting work, and partner with our stakeholders to find solutions to new challenges every day.

Working with nbn’s Legal & Regulatory Team you will provide advice on all aspects of the development, supply and marketing of nbn’s products and services. You will partner with the business and be a “trusted advisor” who helps formulate, draft and negotiate access arrangements that set the pricing and terms and conditions on which wholesale nbn services are supplied to retail service providers.

This will include:

  • Advising on nbn’s supply agreements, including the Wholesale Broadband Agreement (WBA), the contractual vehicle nbn uses to supply products and services to its wholesale customers. The WBA constitutes a standard form of access agreement for the purposes part XIC of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 and reflects the terms of nbn’s Special Access Undertaking (SAU) Variation, which was accepted by the ACCC in October 2023.
  • Providing legal support on product development, service levels, pricing and customer experience across our residential, business and enterprise product suites;
  • Supporting key stakeholders across the nbn business, including our Customer, Customer Contracting, Fixed Wireless Products, Satellite Products, New Developments and Regulatory teams
  • Providing best practice independent commercial, effective and timely support (including risk identification and mitigation) and high quality independent and commercially astute legal advice and support.

As a senior member of the nbn Legal & Regulatory team, you will collaborate and coordinate with your colleagues to provide integrated solutions. You will also contribute to the evolution and development of the L&R function – constantly looking for new ways to deliver a more effective and efficient service to our business partners.

You’ll benefit from “on the job” technical training about nbn’s business which will help you be successful in this role. You will also have access to our bespoke learning and professional development programs and have easy access to in-house sessions. In addition, nbn offers a range of flexible working arrangements and leave entitlements.

As a senior member of the team you will play a positive and proactive role in the Customer & Supply Legal Team, and the broader nbn Legal & Regulatory Team. This includes acting as a role model, a champion of nbn’s values and a mentor for more junior members of the team.

A bit about you

To be successful in this role, you will be legally qualified, hold a current applicable practicing certificate, and have relevant post qualification experience at a law firm or in-house. You will have experience within the telecommunications and/or technology industries or through advising regulated entities in other industries such as operators of electricity transmission or distribution networks, gas pipelines or water networks. You’ll be well versed in commercial contracts and preferably have experience with the development, supply and marketing of telecommunications and/or technology products.

You will be a team player with excellent relationship building and problem-solving skills, and you will be proactively involved in the decision-making process. You will be able to think on your feet while providing high quality, high volume, practical, commercially and strategically astute independent legal advice.

You will love technology and digital innovation and be open to learning new skills and adapting to meet new business and professional challenges.
