Shopware is a leading e-commerce system that enables businesses worldwide to scale quickly and efficiently in digital commerce. As a forward-thinking open-source solution, Shopware is already being used by some of the largest European brands, retailers, and manufacturers in the B2C and B2B sectors.
As a Senior Quality Engineer – Checkout & Payments, you contribute to ensuring reliable payment processes across Shopware, Shopware Payments, and external systems. Your focus is on practical integration testing, test automation, and release validation: you verify that customers can successfully complete a purchase, that order and payment status are correct, and that errors and retry attempts are handled safely.
You will become part of the Quality Operations area within Delivery Excellence and work closely with the Checkout & Payments teams, product management, and other Quality Engineers. You bring quality early into feature planning, translate product risks into actionable tests, investigate errors, and provide clear recommendations on release readiness. This position is a senior engineering role without management responsibility. You develop the existing acceptance test framework and CI infrastructure further, rather than building a separate test organization.
Requirements
-
Define and implement risk-based test coverage. Work with Product and Engineering to identify critical workflows for merchants and customers, existing test coverage, and gaps. Agree on a clearly defined test scope for each development package and guide it through implementation, review, and validation.
-
Develop and maintain automated tests. Use TypeScript, Playwright, and API and integration tests to verify behavior in the storefront, in Shopware, in the Payments service, and at the interfaces to payment providers. Choose the appropriate test level instead of implementing every check in a browser test.
-
Check payment results, not just UI behavior. Verify order creation, payment status, amounts, and currencies. Supplement test coverage according to product risk with relevant scenarios for cancellation, capture, refund, webhooks, and recovery.
-
Evaluate integration errors together with developers. Check authentication, tenant separation, repeated requests, idempotency, and asynchronous status changes as needed. Ensure that errors do not cause duplicate payments or inconsistent orders.
-
Make test results usable for delivery. Integrate and maintain product tests together with Engineering and Product Operations in CI. Improve test data, repeatability, and diagnostic capabilities. Distinguish between product errors, issues with payment providers or environments, and unstable tests.
-
Validate releases and compatibility. Check relevant release artifacts, upgrades, and supported configurations in the existing release process. Convert insights from incidents into regression tests and concrete improvements.
-
Communicate a clear QA recommendation. Explain to Product and Engineering the scope tested, results, remaining risks, blockers, and next steps. Raise priority conflicts early and guide open items to their resolution, an agreed-upon handoff, or a clear decision.
-
Share responsibility and knowledge. Review test code, work with colleagues in pairing, and improve shared fixtures and documentation together. Coordinate with other Quality Engineers so that test coverage can be maintained and supported by multiple people.
What you bring:
-
Experience developing and maintaining automated tests for production software, including API and integration tests as well as end-to-end tests.
-
Very strong programming skills in TypeScript or JavaScript and practical experience with Playwright or a comparable framework. You can work confidently in a Playwright-based codebase.
-
Experience with CI pipelines, Git, code reviews, reproducible test environments, and debugging using logs, traces, and application code.
-
Understanding of HTTP APIs, authentication, asynchronous processing, and state transitions – including how to test error and retry behavior.
-
The ability to translate unclear product requirements into testable scenarios, prioritize by risk, and execute meaningful work steps – and to seek support when needed.
-
A cooperative mindset: you enjoy working in a team, learn curious from others, and gladly share your knowledge and experience.
-
Clear spoken and written communication in English as well as experience working directly with developers and product colleagues on quality risks and release decisions.
Nice to have:
Experience with payment providers, e-commerce, or financial transactions is helpful. Also welcome are skills in PHP/Symfony, Shopware, API contract testing based on OpenAPI, containerized environments, or multi-tenant services. Experience with AI-assisted development and testing tools is also welcome, as long as results are independently checked and verified.
We value different career paths and perspectives. You don't need to have experience in every area mentioned to apply. Knowledge of Shopware or PayPal is not a prerequisite.
How success is measured:
You will define your first priorities together with Product, Engineering, and the Quality Engineering team during onboarding. These include:
-
A current overview of critical payment workflows, existing test coverage, and major gaps – with clearly assigned implementation responsibilities.
-
An initial purchase and payment flow that runs reliably in CI or within an agreed release gate, verifies order and payment results, and provides meaningful clues when errors occur.
-
Risk-based test coverage for additional integrations and expansion stages of the New Checkout – with clear QA recommendations, documented limitations, and shared responsibility for test maintenance.
Progress will be measured by the actual functioning test coverage, test reliability, and the meaningfulness of release decisions – not solely by the number of tests or the extent of documentation.

Corporate culture: Open culture, flat hierarchies, initiative is encouraged.
-
Employment contracts: Permanent positions offer long-term security.
-
Flexibility: Flexible working hours and options for remote work and full-remote contracts.
