Job Description

We are looking for an exceptional Sr. Statistical Programmer Analyst who is interested in collaborating on research in the Department of Health Policy and Management (HPM) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH). The programmer will be focused on a variety of research projects focused on substance use treatment policy, the criminal legal system, and Medicaid. This position is supported by grants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Examples of projects will include an evaluation of a state law in Maryland that requires jails to offer medications for opioid use disorder prior to release, characterizing patterns of urine drug testing for patients in opioid use disorder treatment, and studying the implementation of mobile methadone programs in New York State. The effective candidate will be highly motivated, detail-oriented, a self-starter, and good at working both collaboratively and independently. Background in these topics and interests in the health of marginalized and disadvantaged populations is a plus. The successful candidate will have prior work experience analyzing large datasets. Position is offered as 100% remote, but hybrid (2-3 days on campus) is possible if the successful candidate prefers.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate leadership around data curation and analysis task in a highly flexible, dynamic team environment.
  • Perform data intake and cleaning tasks on large administrative datasets (e.g., claims, incarceration records)
  • Ensure compliance with human subjects and data security protocols.
  • Use advanced statistical and programming software (e.g., SAS, Stata, SOL, R, Python) to conduct exploratory and hypothesis-driven data analysis.
  • Solve complex data problems using appropriate methodologies for analyses (e.g., advanced regression modeling, spatial, and longitudinal analysis)
  • Create data visualizations and tables.
  • Engage in ongoing meetings with research partners.
  • Participate in the development, submission, and publication of study manuscripts.
  • Support the mentorship of junior data analyst colleagues.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Direct programming experience while pursuing education may count towards related experience.
  • Significant undergraduate programming coursework or independent project can be considered as related experience.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Three years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Economics, Public Health, or a related field preferred.
