Fuel50 is seeking an experienced Staff Engineer to join our Engineering Team in New Zealand. In this role, you will be responsible for making significant technical contributions, providing technical leadership, and mentoring the engineering team. Your main focus will be on software development, architectural oversight, setting technical direction, and tackling some of our most challenging problems hands-on. This role reports to a Technical Team Lead.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work on projects such as rearchitecting code, solving scaling issues, and implementing new technologies for features and bug fixes.
  • Taking initiative and ownership of work and technical challenges that have lots of ambiguity and little guidance.
  • Write CI/CD pipelines, RFCs, and engineering standards, and improve processes including QA.
  • Develop technical specifications and implementation plans for various features and bug fixes.
  • Occasional non-business hours calls to support global customers.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of software industry experience with expertise in SaaS architecture and technologies such as Java, Angular, MySQL, CI/CD, Docker, and Linux.
  • Strong attention to detail, passion for engineering excellence, and automation.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and providing technical inputs to a team.
  • Excellent communication skills to convey technical concepts to both technical and non-technical staff.
  • Strong business understanding to transform business and product objectives into practical software solutions.
  • Ability to tackle challenges like scaling, high availability, observability, and monitoring.
  • Ability to determine a pragmatic use of microservices and automation.
  • Passion for breaking work into small pull requests and embracing iteration.
  • Experience with architectural reviews, scoping sessions, and writing technical requirement briefs.
  • Strong technical leadership skills, coaching abilities, and building relationships with senior staff.
  • Understanding of the "big picture" from infrastructure to database, backend, and frontend.
  • Participate in a culture of continuous feedback with your reports and manager.
  • Willingness to travel to the Takapuna (Auckland) office quarterly for planning and workshops.
