About CIR

CIR is an independent, non-profit social enterprise dedicated to countering disinformation, exposing human rights abuses, and combating online behaviour harmful to women and minorities. We achieve these goals through research, digital investigations, strategic communications, building the capacity of local partners, and supporting media to amplify the impact of our work.

Whilst CIR working language is English our staff are based across Europe, the UK and other countries reflecting the diversity of our workforce and our commitment to international collaboration.

The role

CIR is looking for an individual with research and data engineering skills to join the team. This individual will work closely with the Research Manager to deliver a high-quality investigation into Technology Facilitated Gender-Based Violence on YouTube and TikTok in multiple languages.

Researching Technology Facilitated Gender-Based Violence is an essential part of better-protecting women and girls online and empowering their safe and meaningful participation in all forms of public life. This project has already amplified the issue, making it a prime-time national TV news item, and continues to underpin CSO activity through enabling evidence-based activism.

Project aims:

  • Strengthen the evidence base on Technology Facilitated Gender-Based Violencein Ethiopia.
  • Better inform government institutions, civil society organisations (CSOs), social media companies, and the general public about Technology Facilitated Gender-Based Violence in Ethiopia.
  • Empower CSOs and government institutions in Ethiopia with practical recommendations on addressing Technology Facilitated Gender-Based Violence.

Requirements

  • Ability to automate processes to scrape, clean and sort data from YouTube and TikTok, and to analyse this data
  • Experience and confidence in planning and carrying out research using user-generated content
  • Familiarity with different tools for data extraction and analysis is useful, but not essential
  • Good written and verbal communication skills and ability to work effectively as part of a remote team
  • Experience researching online hate speech or similar phenomenon is desired but not essential
  • Ability to identify different languages within the dataset, so that language-specific datasets can be shared with data annotators (English, Amharic, Afaan Oromo, and Tigrigna)
  • We are looking for someone who could work approximately 70 days between August 2024 and December 2024.
