Job Description

Brown and Caldwell (BC) has an exciting opportunity for a professional with 8+ years of experience in consulting or water/wastewater utility asset management to join our growing Utility Performance consulting team. The ideal candidate will leverage their extensive background and knowledge of utility infrastructure (linear and vertical assets) to develop and deliver practical, data-informed business and asset management program solutions that enhance utility performance. Experience in technology enablement activities (planning, analysis, data management, application selection and configuration or development) that support asset management, operations and maintenance, capital delivery, and fiscal performance of water utilities is crucial. The role involves working with a collaborative team environment where personal contributions and teamwork are highly valued. Remote work is allowed with a preference to be located near any BC office.

Ideal Candidate Profile:

The ideal candidate for this role will be a strategic thinker and a proactive leader, capable of managing complex tasks and assisting water and wastewater utilities with planning for and implementing digital transformation. They should have a strong understanding of both technical and operational aspects of common IT systems used by water and wastewater utilities (GIS, CMMS, condition assessment, risk management, etc.), coupled with excellent interpersonal skills to build relationships with clients and internal teams. The candidate should be comfortable working in a dynamic environment, often managing multiple priorities simultaneously. The ability to communicate complex ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences is essential.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Build partnerships with all levels of a client organization to develop practical technology-related plans, practices and programs and assisting clients with successful implementation.
  • Create and lead client-facing workshops (both in person and virtually) and lead the analysis and synthesis of information into written deliverables.
  • Build relationships with internal teams that are located throughout the United States and in various time zones.
  • Complete site visits to water and wastewater facilities to conduct consulting work across the United States.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • B.S. degree in a related field such as engineering (Civil, Environmental, etc.), sciences, economics, business, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in consulting and engineering services, with a strong focus on project delivery for water and wastewater municipal clients, including creating and delivering data and technology plans and implementations for water utilities.

Technical Skills and Knowledge:

  • Proven technical skills with the ability to articulate ideas and concepts both visually and contextually are required.
  • Significant knowledge and experience in supporting the development of asset management programs, including level of service, asset inventory and hierarchy, data management practices and tools, risk determination through consequence and likelihood of failure analysis, condition assessment methodologies and strategies, maintenance strategy development, capital program justification and prioritization, and performance metrics, including long-term capital planning.
  • Proficiency in data visualization technologies (Power BI and/or Esri ArcGIS platform applications preferred), specifically in building comprehensive dashboards that transform client ideas business information needs into data-informed systems that facilitate decision-making processes, as well as provide clear visibility into workflows and processes.
  • Knowledge of various CMMS systems and experience with selecting, optimizing, and/or implementing them for water and wastewater utilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop use cases for integrating real-time and performance data (e.g., from Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, IoT sensors, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) for network systems) with enterprise business system data.
  • Experience with aligning data and technology solutions to meet water utility operational and organizational goals, even if gained through related systems or utilities, is highly valued. Advanced asset management methods and practices using appropriate analytical methods and tools to assess the condition and remaining useful life of assets is desirable.
  • Knowledge of international asset management standards is preferred.
  • Experience with vertical and linear asset classes for both water and wastewater utilities.
  • Understanding of or experience with condition assessment methods and strategies is desirable.
  • General understanding of business, environmental and regulatory drivers for clients and projects.

Enterprise Technology and Digital Transformation:

  • Knowledge of the potential applications for emerging technologies into business and asset management, including large language models (LLM), data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML) applications to inform predictive actions (e.g. maintenance, system/process control) and performance optimization.
  • Familiarity with implementing smart infrastructure solutions, including IoT devices and real-time monitoring systems, to enhance asset performance and reliability.
  • Experience in developing digital transformation and enterprise data management strategies and implementation roadmaps for water and wastewater utilities.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint, Project, and Power BI.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to conduct effective presentations with clients and develop and deliver written documents.
  • The ability to successfully deliver projects in a collaborative fashion and interface with Brown and Caldwell’s local, regional, and national technical practitioners, as well as help mentor junior staff.

Physical and Travel Requirements:

  • Ability and willingness to travel to support ongoing projects across the United States (estimated travel 25%).
  • Ability and willingness to access water and wastewater plants, collection systems, and water pump stations, and on rare occasions, confined space locations.
  • Ability to work in extreme temperatures, including heat and cold, and to wear required safety equipment at sites (hard hats, steel-toed boots or other approved toe protection, safety glasses, etc.).
  • Ability to stand for several hours observing and documenting asset conditions and/or critical facility operations.
  • Ability to safely navigate water and wastewater facilities of varying sizes that may have uneven surfaces to perform inspections and take photographs.
  • Ability to climb stairs (2-3 flights) or ladders (up to 24 feet typically) to access structures for visual inspection.
  • Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.

Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee’s primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Location A: $97,000 - $132,000
