Job Description

User Research Intern - Flickr

For more than two decades, Awesome, the parent company of SmugMug and Flickr, has thrived as a private, mission-focused, values-led company.

We’re on a mission to build an enduring, iconic, photography brand that connects people through photography and unleashes the value of the stories they tell. Our team makes products that thrill photographers of all types, crafting experiences that empower them to preserve their precious memories, share their art, and run their businesses.

A career at Awesome is much more than a job. Our people come first, and we invest in their growth and prioritize their well-being. Your work will contribute to our mission while leaving a positive, lasting impact on our community and our world.

Awesome is striving to become the most trusted brand in photography. Our expanding family of brands includes SmugMug, Flickr, and This Week in Photo (TWiP). Awesome is a Certified Evergreen brand. We’re also recently a Certified Great Place to Work, Climate Neutral, and members of the Conservation Alliance.

Join us at Flickr, where our commitment to user education, data-driven decision making, and creative problem-solving drives everything we do. As a user-research (UXR) intern, you'll immerse yourself in a dynamic environment that fosters continuous learning and collaboration within a welcoming and inclusive team.

You'll be fully integrated into our product team. Here, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping innovative projects that directly impact our vast community of members and visitors. Through hands-on learning and personalized mentorship, you'll have the opportunity to cultivate your career while contributing meaningfully to our mission. We provide dedicated support and guidance to help you enhance your professional and technical skills, empowering you to make a substantial difference. Come be a part of our journey to illuminate lives and elevate experiences for millions around the globe!

Your opportunity:

  • Spearhead a project, identifying target segments for product promotion, exploring revenue opportunities, and pinpointing product enhancements.
  • Use data, external research, and partner services to compile a comprehensive report that guides strategic decisions.
  • Work collaboratively with product managers, product designers, data scientists, and engineers, with the guidance and support of senior researchers.
  • Work with designers and product managers to run usability studies of new designs and features.
  • Craft compelling narratives about users’ needs, attitudes, aspirations, expectations, obstacles, and motivations.
  • Laptops and equipment will be provided.
  • Duration: June 2024 start date for a total of 12 weeks.

What you bring:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in human–computer interaction, cognitive psychology, social or behavioral sciences, statistics, business, or a related field with an expected graduation date of Spring 2025 (or Fall 2024).
  • Familiarity with qualitative and quantitative research methods and demonstrable experience conducting research projects.
  • A knack for getting to the heart of the matter, telling stories and being convincing—making the opaque feel obvious in hindsight.

Interested in:

  • Taking photos and photo-library management.
  • Quantitative research methods, including surveys and statistical analysis.
  • Qualitative research methods and frameworks, such as in-depth interviews, diary studies, journey mapping, card sorting, or usability studies.
  • Creating prototypes in Figma or related software.
