Remote Work in Alaska

Alaska's economy has always been defined by its geography — vast, remote, and resource-rich. For most of the twentieth century, oil dominated everything. The discovery of oil at Prudhoe Bay in 1968 and the subsequent construction of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline transformed the state's finances almost overnight. Companies like BP, ConocoPhillips, and ExxonMobil became the backbone of Alaska's private-sector employment, and the Alaska Permanent Fund — funded by oil revenues — still sends annual dividends to every resident today. At its peak, the oil industry accounted for the majority of state government revenue.

Beyond oil, Alaska has always relied on commercial fishing as a major employer. The seafood processing industry, centered in Kodiak, Dutch Harbor, and Ketchikan, employs tens of thousands of workers seasonally, with companies like Trident Seafoods and Pacific Seafood operating large facilities throughout the state. Tourism is another pillar — cruise lines, wilderness lodges, and adventure travel operators draw visitors from around the world, supporting a broad hospitality and guiding workforce.

The federal government is also a dominant employer in Alaska, through military installations like Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson and Fort Wainwright, as well as the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, and Bureau of Land Management, which manage enormous swaths of public land. The University of Alaska system employs thousands more, with campuses in Fairbanks, Anchorage, and Juneau.

Remote work has had a uniquely transformative effect in Alaska. For decades, living in Anchorage or Juneau meant either accepting work tied to the local resource economy or leaving the state entirely. Remote work has opened a third path, allowing Alaskans to hold professional roles with lower-48 companies — in tech, finance, marketing, legal services, and beyond — while remaining in the state they love. The time zone gap with the continental U.S. can be a challenge for synchronous collaboration, but many remote workers find the trade-off more than worthwhile given Alaska's unrivaled outdoor lifestyle.

Connectivity has historically been the biggest barrier to remote work in rural Alaska, where satellite internet was often the only option. That is changing with the expansion of fiber infrastructure in Anchorage and improved satellite options statewide. For professionals based in Anchorage — home to roughly 40 percent of the state's population — remote work is now a practical and increasingly common reality, bringing new economic diversity to a state that has long been at the mercy of commodity prices.
