Remote Work in Florida

Florida's economic transformation over the past century is one of the most remarkable in American history. As recently as the early 1900s, the state was largely undeveloped swampland with a tiny population. The invention of air conditioning, the expansion of the highway system, and the post-World War II baby boom and retirement migration changed everything. Florida became the fastest-growing state in the nation, and its economy diversified across tourism, real estate, finance, aerospace, and healthcare.

The tourism industry came first, catalyzed by railroad magnates Henry Flagler and Henry Plant, who built resort hotels and rail lines down both coasts in the 1880s and 1890s. Miami Beach, Palm Beach, and Tampa became winter playgrounds for northern elites. Walt Disney's decision to build Walt Disney World near Orlando in 1971 transformed central Florida from orange groves into one of the world's most visited tourist destinations. Today Florida's tourism industry generates over $100 billion annually and employs more than 1.5 million people.

Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center became the center of the American space program in the 1960s, with NASA employing thousands of engineers, scientists, and contractors along what became known as Florida's "Space Coast." That tradition continues today — SpaceX, Boeing, United Launch Alliance, and Blue Origin all operate launch facilities or manufacturing on or near the Cape, making Brevard County one of the most active aerospace regions in the world.

In finance, Fidelity Investments, Raymond James, Publix Super Markets (technically retail, but headquartered in Lakeland), and a large concentration of hedge funds and family offices have made South Florida and Tampa significant financial centers. Miami has aggressively positioned itself as a fintech and tech hub, attracting startups and talent from New York and San Francisco with its favorable tax environment — Florida has no state income tax.

The no-income-tax advantage has made Florida one of the top destinations for high-earning remote workers in the country. The migration of financial professionals, tech workers, and entrepreneurs from New York and California accelerated dramatically during and after the pandemic. Miami, Tampa, and Jacksonville have all invested in tech ecosystem development to capitalize on the influx. Orlando's diverse economy — spanning tourism, defense, simulation technology, and healthcare — also supports a wide range of remote work opportunities. For remote workers who value warm weather, outdoor lifestyle, and no state income tax, Florida remains one of the most compelling destinations in the country.
