Georgia's economic history spans from colonial-era cotton plantations to one of the most dynamic regional economies in the modern South. Cotton dominated for nearly two centuries — the invention of the cotton gin by Eli Whitney in 1793 (while visiting a Georgia plantation) made large-scale cotton farming profitable and entrenched the state's agricultural economy through the Civil War. The film tax credit program Georgia adopted in 2008 transformed the state into "the Hollywood of the South."
