Georgia's economic history spans from colonial-era cotton plantations to one of the most dynamic regional economies in the modern South. Cotton dominated for nearly two centuries — the invention of the cotton gin by Eli Whitney in 1793 (while visiting a Georgia plantation) made large-scale cotton farming profitable and entrenched the state's agricultural economy through the Civil War. Remote work has reshaped Georgia's talent geography. Atlanta has long attracted talent from across the Southeast, but remote work has allowed workers throughout the state — in Savannah, Augusta, Columbus, and rural areas — to access Atlanta-caliber or national-caliber salaries without relocating.
