Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Schofield Barracks, and Marine Corps Base Hawaii together employ tens of thousands of active-duty personnel and civilian contractors. Defense spending is among Hawaii's top economic drivers.
Tourism overtook every other sector in the postwar period. American Airlines began mainland-to-Hawaii service in 1959, the same year Hawaii achieved statehood, opening the islands to mass tourism. Today Waikiki, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island collectively host millions of visitors per year, supporting hotels, resorts, restaurants, and an enormous hospitality workforce. Hawaiian Airlines is a major private employer and the state's flag carrier.
