Iowa's economy is built on some of the most productive agricultural land on earth. John Deere, though headquartered in nearby Moline, Illinois, has deep Iowa roots and operates major manufacturing and parts distribution facilities throughout the state. Deere's presence — alongside CNH Industrial, AGCO, and a web of smaller agricultural equipment manufacturers — makes Iowa a center of the global farm machinery industry. Des Moines emerged as a major insurance and financial services hub in the late nineteenth century, attracted by the city's central location, stable business environment, and proximity to the farm economy that needed crop and property insurance.
