Remote Work in New Mexico

New Mexico's economic history is a layered story of indigenous civilization, Spanish colonial governance, cattle ranching, and a twentieth-century transformation driven by nuclear science and federal investment that few other states can parallel. The ancient Pueblo peoples built sophisticated societies across the Rio Grande valley and the Colorado Plateau; the Spanish established the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the U.S. at Acoma in 1150 CE; the cattle and sheep ranching economy that followed American acquisition of the territory in 1848 shaped the land and culture for generations.

The atomic age changed New Mexico forever. The Manhattan Project selected the remote plateau of Los Alamos in 1943 as the primary design laboratory for the first nuclear weapons. Scientists including J. Robert Oppenheimer, Enrico Fermi, Richard Feynman, and hundreds of others lived and worked in isolation at Los Alamos, creating technology that ended World War II but also began the nuclear age. Los Alamos National Laboratory, one of the two primary nuclear weapons design laboratories in the country, remains among the largest employers in New Mexico, with roughly 14,000 employees working on national security, energy, and scientific research programs.

Sandia National Laboratories, established in Albuquerque in 1945 to engineer, test, and deliver nuclear weapons (building on the designs from Los Alamos), is the other pillar of New Mexico's national security economy. Sandia employs roughly 14,000 people and has expanded its work into cybersecurity, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing.

The White Sands Missile Range and Holloman Air Force Base in southern New Mexico, along with Cannon Air Force Base in the eastern plains, further cement the federal government's dominant economic role in the state. Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque is one of the largest Air Force bases in the country by acreage and a major employer.

Outside of the national security complex, New Mexico's economy includes oil and gas production in the Permian Basin (extending from West Texas into southeastern New Mexico), tourism centered on Santa Fe's art scene and cultural heritage, and a growing film industry — the state's generous tax credits have made it a popular production location for Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, and dozens of feature films.

Remote work has brought new economic blood to Albuquerque and Santa Fe, where the combination of high-altitude desert beauty, relatively low cost of living, vibrant arts communities, and proximity to National Forests and ski areas makes for a compelling remote work lifestyle. Santa Fe in particular attracts creative professionals and technologists who value its unique cultural identity.
