Remote Work in Ohio

Ohio's economic history is a case study in American industrial might, decline, and reinvention. The state sits at the industrial heart of the country, rich in coal, well-positioned on Great Lakes shipping routes, and criss-crossed by rivers and canals that made it a natural manufacturing hub from the earliest days of the republic. Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Columbus each developed distinct economic identities that together made Ohio one of the most populous and productive states in the nation for most of the twentieth century.

Cleveland's industrial story is dominated by steel and oil. John D. Rockefeller founded Standard Oil in Cleveland in 1870, and the city became the center of the early American petroleum refining industry before the company's focus shifted to New York. Steel mills along the Cuyahoga River and the Lake Erie shore made Cleveland a heavy industrial city in the Rust Belt mold — powerful, prosperous in the mid-century, and vulnerable to the deindustrialization of the 1970s and 1980s. The Cleveland Clinic, founded in 1921, rose to global medical eminence and has been a critical economic anchor during Cleveland's post-industrial reinvention, as has Case Western Reserve University and a growing healthcare technology sector.

Cincinnati developed around the meatpacking, soap, and consumer goods industries of the nineteenth century. Procter & Gamble, founded in Cincinnati in 1837 as a soap and candle company, grew into one of the largest consumer goods companies in the world, with brands including Tide, Pampers, Gillette, and Crest. Kroger, founded in Cincinnati in 1883, is today one of the largest grocery retailers in the country. Fifth Third Bank, American Financial Group, and Western & Southern Financial anchor a substantial Cincinnati financial services sector.

Columbus, as the state capital and home to The Ohio State University — one of the largest universities by enrollment in the country — developed a more government- and education-centric economy that has proven more resilient to industrial swings. Limited Brands (now L Brands, parent of Victoria's Secret and Bath & Body Works) and Nationwide Insurance built major Columbus operations. The city has successfully attracted technology companies including JPMorgan Chase technology centers, Oracle, and a growing startup community in the Short North and Italian Village neighborhoods.

Intel's announcement of a massive semiconductor manufacturing complex near Columbus in 2022 — potentially the largest investment in Ohio's history — promises to transform the region's technology sector in ways not seen since the auto industry's post-WWII expansion. Remote work has already brought new energy to Ohio cities, where housing costs remain dramatically below national averages and livability is increasingly recognized.
