Remote Work in Rhode Island

Rhode Island, the smallest state in the union, has an economic history that punches well above its weight, having been central to the Industrial Revolution in America, the colonial maritime trade, and a distinctive culture of craft, innovation, and independent commerce that reflects its founding as a haven from religious conformity.

Roger Williams founded Providence in 1636 as a refuge of religious tolerance, and that independent spirit shaped a commercial culture that thrived on trade, manufacturing, and artisanal production. Providence became one of the most important colonial ports, participating extensively in the Atlantic trade — including, regretfully, the slave trade, which Rhode Island merchants dominated for a period. The wealth from that trade financed the textile mills that would make Rhode Island a cradle of American industrialization.

Slater Mill, built in Pawtucket in 1793 by Samuel Slater using memorized plans for English textile machinery, launched the American Industrial Revolution. The Blackstone River valley quickly filled with textile mills, and Rhode Island became one of the most industrialized places in the world relative to its size through the nineteenth century. Brown & Sharpe Manufacturing, founded in Providence in 1833, produced precision measuring tools and machining equipment that were essential to the quality standards of American manufacturing for well over a century. Textron, now a diversified defense and industrial conglomerate with operations in aerospace (Bell Helicopter) and military vehicles (TAPV), was founded in Providence in 1923.

The jewelry industry became another cornerstone of Rhode Island manufacturing, with Providence developing the largest concentration of jewelry manufacturers in the country by the early twentieth century. Companies like Swank, Trifari, and dozens of smaller producers made Providence the center of American costume jewelry production.

Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Providence give the city an intellectual and creative energy that fuels a strong design, technology, and arts economy. Amica Insurance (headquartered in Lincoln), Hasbro (headquartered in Pawtucket), and Textron are among the state's largest corporate employers.

Remote work has been particularly impactful in Rhode Island, where the state's small size means most workers are within commuting distance of Providence — but where housing in the immediate city has grown expensive. Remote work allows professionals to live in the more affordable towns of northern and western Rhode Island — Woonsocket, Foster, Burrillville — while accessing Providence or national employers without a daily commute. The state's proximity to Boston also gives Rhode Island remote workers access to one of the strongest tech job markets in the country.
