FedEx, founded by Fred Smith in Memphis in 1971, is one of the most important logistics companies in the world and the city's largest employer. The Memphis hub — where FedEx processes millions of packages every night — is one of the busiest air cargo facilities on earth. The Port of Memphis is a major Mississippi River shipping terminal, and the city's central location and logistics infrastructure have attracted Amazon, Nike, and dozens of other distribution operations.
