Nashville's transformation from a regional capital known primarily for country music into a genuine American boomtown is one of the most dramatic urban economic stories of the early twenty-first century. Country music has always been the foundation — the Grand Ole Opry, established in 1927, made Nashville the center of American country music, and the Music Row corridor of studios, publishers, and labels has sustained a music industry of global significance. But Nashville's economy broadened dramatically in the 1990s and 2000s. Memphis, Tennessee's largest city by population, is a global logistics powerhouse. FedEx, founded by Fred Smith in Memphis in 1971, is one of the most important logistics companies in the world and the city's largest employer. The Memphis hub — where FedEx processes millions of packages every night — is one of the busiest air cargo facilities on earth. The Port of Memphis is a major Mississippi River shipping terminal, and the city's central location and logistics infrastructure have attracted Amazon, Nike, and dozens of other distribution operations.
