What you’d be doing in this role

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

At the moment, this role is focused on:

  • As a team lead, you will coach, mentor, and grow a team of engineers while developing your coaching capability to scale the team and meet the needs of the growing Docs vision.
  • As an experienced engineer, you will help the team deliver scalable and robust product features for Canva users around the world.
  • You will work closely with the Product Manager and Product Designer to understand and contribute to the product roadmap.
  • You will drive the planning and refinement of cycle goals, ensuring there is alignment between the company, group, and teams.
  • Balancing feature work and tech debt reduction
  • You will foster a culture of collaboration and advocate for the engineering needs of non-technical collaborators within the group.
  • You will own and drive the delivery of large, cross-team, and cross-group initiatives and projects from ideation to completion, with autonomy and independence of decision making.

You're probably a match if you have

  • Previous experience in technical people leadership or mentorship of frontend software engineers.
  • Commercial experience in a software development environment, with a focus on frontend technologies and associated libraries and frameworks. Our frontend stack consists of JavaScript, HTML, CSS, React, TypeScript, MobX, etc.
  • Firmly grounded computer science and engineering fundamentals including concurrency, multithreading, data structures, solution design, architecture, and design patterns.
  • Previous experience in working collaboratively with team members and communicating effectively.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to break large projects down into smaller ones and deliver on them through others.
  • Good writing and verbal communication skills.

About the team

The Work Docs Team’s mission is to build a powerful, yet simple document editor, that empowers workers to be more efficient and more engaging with their docs for work. As a team and sub-group, we work together to deliver key features and an excellent user experience with a strong technical foundation that scale as our product becomes more complex.

Docs for Work) will sit within the Editing Group, with the teams building the products that our users love. Due to incredible product growth and the demand for exciting new features and functionality that will elevate the user experience to new heights, we're seeking to hire an engineering leader that motivated by building a high-functioning team and delivering a world-class product.

We are seeking someone who wants to be in the thick of it - working closely with product and design to create the roadmap, engaging with key stakeholders throughout the business, being across technical designs and decisions and caring for the professional growth and development of the people they lead.
